This Seems Kind Of Wrong of the Day: A 30-year-old Lufkin man, who was mistaken for burglar in his own home, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for resisting arrest.
When Lufkin Police responded to a call concerning a “black male” kicking in a front door on Finley St., homeowner Marco Sauceda locked himself in the bathroom and refused to come out. Officers eventually knocked down the door and shot Sauceda with a pepper ball gun.
“A person should feel secure in their own home no matter black, white, Hispanic, Asian, I don’t care who they are, they should feel secure in their own home,” Sauceda’s attorney Ryan Deaton told a six-panel Angelina County jury. “The police have no right to come in your house and push you around and beat you up and do the things they did on March, 15, 2009.”
Deaton further argued that his client “has a child’s mind,” along with an obstructive language barrier. Prosecutor Gary Taylor retorted that “this whole incident could have been avoided very easily if he would have said, ‘Me llamo Marco. Es mi casa’.”
While the jury eventually found Sauceda guilty of a Class A misdemeanor, a letter sent to Judge Derek Flournoy prior to the reading of the verdict asked for leniency. Flournoy later told Sauceda he doesn’t agree “with the notion you are a victim in this case,” and would have sentenced him to six months had it not been for the jury’s letter.
Deaton told the Lufkin Daily News that he is working on bringing a civil lawsuit against the city.

I’m currently having an argument with a girl on Facebook, who is trying to get me to join the walk. In my hometown, women are getting together for an Anti-Slutwalk.  I can’t agree with this.  We don’t ask to be raped. Yes, we should take caution like anyone should ie being mugged or jumped. But we should have the right to dress the way we want. We’re taught not to get raped when really that’s one-sided. We should also be taught “don’t rape”. It’s implying that women that have been raped aren’t smart enough to not be raped or molested. That they put themselves in that situation. I’ll bet you that women in jeans and a turtleneck sweater are just as much of a temptation to a man who has the implication to rape as a woman in a miniskirt. We are the victims, not bait. 

Of course, everyone should be aware of their surroundings and always be cautious. But we don’t ask to be murdered either. Fashion has nothing to do with it. Being sexually promiscuous has nothing to do with it. The name itself “Anti-Slutwalk” is ridiculous and insulting. It’s slut-shaming. Slutwalk empowers, takes the word “slut” away from those who shame and redefines it as something to be proud of. Rape Prevention Walk could have been fine but these people are obviously against a feminist organisation that I approve of.

The other day I got an [angry, condescending] anonymous message saying that a claim I had made online that only white people can enact racism was “patently untrue.” The anonymous writer backed this up by saying that racism was discrimination, prejudice, or hate based on one’s race. I strongly, passionately disagree with this definition. Here’s why.
I’m a mixed person—my mother is a white American, and my father is an indigenous Mexican immigrant. I identify as a light-skinned Chicano. I share this because I think it is very important that I speak to my specific experience (and no one else’s.) In my life, being a light-skinned Chicano has meant receiving and accessing an incredible amount of white privilege. I frequently pass as white, or am labeled as “racially ambiguous” by fellow people of color and white people alike.
I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, a largely white-liberal city in which my racial and ethnic identities were often misread. This meant that, though I was raised in a bilingual, multi-culturallly identified household, a household in which discussions of racism and politics were frequent, my primary identity was shaped through a lens of whiteness.
I, like many of us, received messages all of my life (from school, society, the media) that racism was a personal act of prejudice against someone based on their skin color. Because I had not yet begun to identify my white privilege, and because I was not only comfortable with the pervasive, unquestioned whiteness that surrounded me but actually benefitted from it, I accepted this definition of racism.
I have a distinct memory of the first time I was asked to question this. I was 14, a Gay Straight Alliance organizer at a training retreat in St. Louis, attending my first “Anti-Oppression” workshop. A simple formula was presented to me:
POWER + PREJUDICE = RACISM
While it seems simple enough, I became outraged. The facilitators were proposing that only those with POWER (white people) are able to perpetuate racism. This means that those lacking power (people of color) are not able to perpetuate racism. Somehow my whiteness felt wronged, insulted. I had been bullied plenty for being “white” by kids of color growing up, and I wanted desperately to call it something that it was not.
What I came to understand in the following years is that racism (and sexism, and ableism, and heterosexism, and shadism, etc.) is not an isolated act. It is not a personal prejudice or an individual problem (though it does indeed operate interpersonally and internally as well). Its true destructiveness lies in its pervasiveness: racism operates at every systemic and institutional level. I believe that racism is an institutionally supported system of perpetuating, enforcing, and valuing whiteness and white supremacy in our society. Racism operates at every level to marginalize, criminalize, devalue, imprison, and yes, kill off, people of color. Our prison industrial complex*, our economy**, our “War on Drugs”***, and our criminal, family, and environmental**** laws, are racist in that they work to maintain incredible rates of poverty, incarceration, health disparities, inadequate housing, and unequal pay for people of color.
So when I say that people of color can’t enact racism, I mean it. We may have a black president, we may think of ourselves as highly evolved or “post-racial” (BARF), but our society remains firmly entrenched in racism at every level. People of color can be just as prejudiced and hateful as white people. I have no interest in denying this. What I am hoping to clarify is that, without POWER, prejudice is just prejudice. It takes the centuries of power and supremacy that whiteness carries with it to enact racism in this country.
As a person that still regularly receives white privilege, regardless of my identity as a person of color, I actively work to dismantle my internalized racism and work against racist systems and white supremacy at personal, interpersonal, and institutional levels.
I believe that, if you are white and are not actively anti-racist, you are a part of the problem. A mentor of mine once described whiteness as a moving sidewalk. In order to be part of the solution, in order to not work with the system to enforce racism, you can’t walk with the crowd, and you certainly can’t just stop moving. You have to turn around and you have to run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

I’m not threatened by it.  I’m fine with women showing off their bodies.  I’m just sick of some of them expecting the rest of the world to kowtow to them.

Again, with the accusations of fear.  I am not afraid of women.  And I NEVER said that it justified rape; you are a misandrist for suggesting that I said such a thing.

I have my own hypothesis: You are insecure and afraid of male sexuality.  It terrifies you to think that there are men out there who you can’t wrap around your little finger.  When other men make catcalls to you, you hate the fact that you secretly enjoy it, because it might drive you to cheat.  Can I prove any of this?  No, not any more than you can prove your vicious ad hominem attacks on me.  But I can read between the lines.

I’ve got news for you: I love women.  I think that most of the women I’ve met are amazing.  I think the same thing of most of the men I’ve met, too.  Since I have relatively the same opinion of men and women, I treat them the same way: I judge them by their actions and their achievements, and I do not give any special consideration, positive or negative, on the basis of what’s between their legs.  That causes me to be labeled as a sexist.

Guess what?  I’ve had men make degrading sexual remarks about me.  I’ve had men make dirty jokes at work in my presence.  And you know what?  I’m not scarred from it.  I just told them to shut up and leave me alone, and that was all it took.  I am not a helpless little child who runs to mommy and daddy whenever they’re upset.”

…who exactly is afraid of male sexuality in this society? All we’re bombarded with is heterosexual male sexuality! Boys aren’t treated with scrutiny for losing their virginity, advertisements and media are rife with the male gaze. Women are sluts, men are studs, men are supposed to have conquests and women are expected to have regrets.

Let me tell you: I don’t enjoy catcalls. Because catcalls aren’t about sexuality, male or otherwise. They’re about control. They’re about feeling that you, a complete stranger, have the right to loudly assert your unsolicited opinion about my body in a dehumanizing and embarrassing way. And do you know what happens at least half of the time when you ignore or call out a catcaller? They turn violent. They turn angry. They call you ugly, they call you a bitch, they may even threaten you. Don’t believe me? Here you go.  

If you want to approach a beautiful woman, there are ways to do it without threatening or harassing. You don’t have the right to approach anyone, you don’t have the right to invade anyone’s space, and you don’t have the right to assert ownership or intent over a stranger’s body, or anyone’s body who doesn’t consent. 

I’m not afraid of men who are sexual beings or who are attracted to me. I’m threatened by men who feel a right to assert their opinion over my body in a disruptive and rude manner without even knowing me. No good is going to come from that behavior, and since women who are assaulted are constantly judged for not being careful enough (hey! just like you’re doing!), I’m right to be wary.

Finally, the audacity to claim that your response to dirty jokes, advances, and sexual remarks is how women should be able to react? You are approaching this from a position of power. You are a man. You are not considered by society at large to be an automatic sex object, or an object of any kind. There is not an entire culture dehumanizing and degrading men that backs up these jokes. So while they’re still offensive and wrong, they don’t carry the weight of hundreds of years of patriarchal opinions of women’s place in society and sex. They’re not the same. Please try and understand that.

Oh, and calling out sexists isn’t “running to mommy and daddy”. It’s dealing with it. Stop being a disrespectful ass.

We believe that this racist government has robbed us and now we are demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of Black people. We will accept the payment in currency which will be distributed to our many communities. The American racist has taken part in the slaughter of our fifty million Black people. Therefore, we feel this is a modest demand that we make.
  4. WE WANT DECENT HOUSING, FIT FOR THE SHELTER OF HUMAN BEINGS. We believe that if the landlords will not give decent housing to our Black and oppressed communities, then housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that the people in our communities, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for the people.
  5. WE WANT DECENT EDUCATION FOR OUR PEOPLE THAT EXPOSES THE TRUE NATURE OF THIS DECADENT AMERICAN SOCIETY. WE WANT EDUCATION THAT TEACHES US OUR TRUE HISTORY AND OUR ROLE IN THE PRESENT-DAY SOCIETY. We believe in an educational system that will give to our people a knowledge of the self. If you do not have knowledge of yourself and your position in the society and in the world, then you will have little chance to know anything else.
  6. WE WANT COMPLETELY FREE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL BLACK AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE. We believe that the government must provide, free of charge, for the people, health facilities which will not only treat our illnesses, most of which have come about as a result of our oppression, but which will also develop preventive medical programs to guarantee our future survival. We believe that mass health education and research programs must be developed to give all Black and oppressed people access to advanced scientific and medical information, so we may provide our selves with proper medical attention and care.
  7. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND MURDER OF BLACK PEOPLE, OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR, ALL OPPRESSED PEOPLE INSIDE THE UNITED STATES. We believe that the racist and fascist government of the United States uses its domestic enforcement agencies to carry out its program of oppression against black people, other people of color and poor people inside the United States. We believe it is our right, therefore, to defend ourselves against such armed forces and that all Black and oppressed people should be armed for self defense of our homes and communities against these fascist police forces.
  8. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO ALL WARS OF AGGRESSION. We believe that the various conflicts which exist around the world stem directly from the aggressive desire of the United States ruling circle and government to force its domination upon the oppressed people of the world.     the floor above us lives a ‘family’, several women move in and a shifty looking man. they make few appearances in the day, keep to themselves. you will see them leave the building at night, climb into a taxi at some unearthly hour and drive off into a musky darkness that this city is stained with. they return before every one else in the building has awoken and settle back into their second floor apartment. every now and again, when good things happen they make their praise. they cook sweet rice and send it around the building. no one will accept it, every one will be heavy with judgement on these days. everyone except our family, our mother teaches us to share in blessings where there is mercy upon anyone. 

    one evening, tenants across the building call a meeting. the men do what they always do best, howl about these night women. the women support their husbands, ‘haa-ing’ with nothing in their body that tells them otherwise. there is little to think about and this is as close to harmony as this city gets now a days, a city that once felt so different. 

    “we should have them evicted”, one man says.

    “they leave late at night, all of them”, another says. 

    most people will have you believe that this family exist on the edge of society, that we should judge people solely by the work they do or don’t do. all work is work in my family, from the young boy who comes to sweep the floors every day to these women. they are all trying to make an honest living, something to get by on in a country controlled by men who know nothing of this: of this honest living. these women, they are as seedha-saadha* as you can get. there is no hiding behind a mouthful of words, no pretending that sin is reserved for the devil. there is no perfection in anything that is human. 

    my mother is irritable, she is a woman who is no nonsense, a feminist in her own right. she does not believe in this good and bad woman, this idea that some women are any less for who they are or what they do. 

    “what are you doing up so late at that hour that you see these women and it bothers you, i’m asleep but what are you doing?” she asks. 

    they struggle to answer, hasty, nervous, words spilling over one another. 

    “i sometimes smoke a cigarette and so i go down to the street corner”

    “i am checking up on my family”, another asserts. 

    these answers, excuses, proclamations are old. 

    “you can do this from your apartment, you don’t need to go down to the curb to smoke or to check up on your children. these people, they do nothing to you. they leave late at night when you should all be deep in sleep and make not so much of a noise during the day. they pay rent just as we do, they have every right to be here just as we do. they are no different.” 

    silence descends, my mother has finished this matter. it is years before they begin to cause trouble again, throwing accusations against the silence of these women as outcasts. what people will do to belong, what boundaries they will draw, what spaces they will carve out, who they will leave to rot, what kindness they will forget. how mercy is only reserved for a hierarchy.

    “these night women, they are no different” my mother assures me “they are women like any of us”. i have never believed otherwise…

    On Being A Slut… (since my point hasn’t been made countless times already)

    If we want to look at the dictionary definition, a slut is someone who is sexually promiscuous or has loose sexual morals (whatever that means). But, in a society where the objectification of women is so rampant and the word slut is not only restricted to sex, but to any other behavior deemed “unnatural” for a woman it’s easy to get lost in the rhetoric of slut-shaming. And just so there is no confusion whatsoever, slut-shaming is when a woman is policed and labeled a slut based on her sexual promiscuity. 

     
     Research has been done to show the effects on objectification of women in the media and the results are disturbing. “Depression, appearance anxiety, body shame, sexual dysfunction, and eating disorders are only a few among the growing list of repercussions” (Frederickson & Noll, 1997). Contrary to what the dictionary has to say about the word, I have been labeled a slut because I wouldn’t shut up,  discussed sex freely, and also had sex (lots of it). As a young woman, I found out being a slut didn’t mean you only had sex; it meant you talked about it, you were opinionated, and you defended yourself. It was the quickest jab to my reputation even at the young age of fifteen.


    Anyone can be called a slut, even men. A slut for being assertive. A slut for speaking out. There’s even a facebook page titled, “Shut Up, You Stupid Slut!” You can type in the word Slut on Facebook and come up with many pages such as the one up above.  The word slut has been so loosely used in past years, that the societal definition has become.. confusing. It’s not only the word slut that is being used as a way to weaken a woman’s “good” reputation. Words like, “cunt”, “dyke”, and “whore” are being used synonymously with slut. I hear it all the time when I’m out in public and men comment on what a woman is wearing by saying, “Oh wow, what a slutty cunt.” Or, “Look at that dress she’s wearing, she looks like such a dyke whore.”


    So, am I a slut? I enjoy sex and not necessarily monogamous sex. I am opinionated and will defend myself when I need to. I identify as a queer woman, so when I talk about how I am turned on by those of the same sex, am I also a slut then? Yes and no. By society’s definition, I am most definitely characterized as a “slutty woman.” I like short dresses and skirts. I like to show off cleavage. It’s my choice to do so after all.  But, I am also not a slut because sluts do not exist. Sluts are a figment of the patriarchal imagination and in that imagination they are not only sexually active women, but they are thinking, working, productive women who strive to be the best they can be. Again, I say sluts do not exist.


    Sluts are a myth. 


    They myth of “the slut” is that women who like to have a lot of sex are sex-hungry, blindly fucking monsters from hell. Essentially, this idea stems from insecurity from other women and men who are afraid of female sexuality, for whatever reason it may be. It is also scary to a society that values a “good girl” image from all women, from the time a young girl reaches adolescence until the day they die. The myth of the slut is used to control women so they will sit down, shut up and keep their legs closed. As for men, they are seen as sexually promiscuous by nature.


    Herein lies the double standard. Women are sluts. Men are studs. Women are filthy. Men are clean. Jessica Valenti puts it perfectly in He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut and 49 Other Double Standards A Woman Should Know, when she says “Men who have a lot of sexual partners are studs, Casanovas, pimps, and players. Never sluts.” And even when a man is called a slut, it’s never just slut. It’s either man-slut or man-whore. It’s always derived from the feminine and there is never an original derogatory term for men who have promiscuous sex. 


    Now, I recently got into a debate with a young woman on the social media site tumblr. This is what she had to say about “sluts” and my view on them:

    “I don’t even think YOU should refer to women who choose to screw whom they please as sluts (the majority of people have that word registered in their brains as something dirty, wrong, disgusting…) but, I can’t prohibit you to stop using any word at that. “Slutting” is -for the most part- quite degrading when done without a single thought. Women who fuck just because they can, without a thought, without evening questioning if the person they’re screwing even has respect for them or sees them as just a whore, concubine, harlot, jezebel… is wrong. I don’t have respect for girls who fuck without thinking a single thought before the deed is done. Who don’t think for themselves; for their own damn good! I’ve seen guys laugh and talk shit about girls they’ve fucked, because no respect was established whatsoever… And, I’ve witnessed sluts hit on my boyfriend, them being fully aware that he’s taken, it makes me sick. No respect for self nor fellow females and couples overall!  My point being, know what you’re supporting, every single tiny spec of it. 
    Everyone has the right to pork whom they please, no problem there but when you’re fucking just anyone without really knowing what kind of a person they are don’t get pissy when they call you names or treat you a certain way; it’s your own fault. 
    Set them straight before it’s too late.

    I try to keep my mind open at all times, especially when young women start slut-shaming. I attempt to understand 1.) Why are they slut-shaming? 2.) What are their experiences and 3.) How can I talk to them about what they are saying and why it is wrong? In this case the first two have been understood, but the third was the hardest to address. So, while I can’t and won’t link you to the full on discussion I had with her, I will address how problematic her statement is and how it really does affect young girls and women.


    She seems to project this idea of “the slut” which is a mind numbing, blindly fucking monster from hell who wants nothing more than to make every girl’s worst nightmare of stealing their partner come to life. It’s an idea made up in most women’s minds because of insecurities not dealt with head on. She also assumes that because a woman is having sex with more than one person within a short period of time that that woman is somehow not respecting herself. This is straight up offensive to women around the world who have multiple sexual partners, but it is not an unusual stance on the matter. Friends of the past have told me, “Nicole, why don’t you have more self-respect?” But the thing is, I do! I have a lot of it! I have enough self-respect to stick up for my opinions in a public domain, don’t I? And a lot of young women are faced with this argument; that somehow if you have a lot of sex and enjoy it you can’t respect yourself. It’s a lie.

    “Everyone has the right to pork whom they please, no problem there but when you’re fucking just anyone without really knowing what kind of a person they are don’t get pissy when they call you names or treat you a certain way; it’s your own fault. ”


    What really got my blood boiling out of all that she said, was the “it’s your own fault” card. Victim blaming, anyone? This is the epitome of rape culture and the phrase used the most in order to demonize young women according to their sexuality. The really interesting part of the sentence is the fact that she contradicts herself completely by saying everyone has the right to have sex with who they please, but don’t come crying when you get harassed or called names! She doesn’t explicitly say the word “rape” in there, but it is definitely implied with the rest of what she is saying. 
    Comments like the one up above are what contributes to a rape culture that is so set on limiting a woman’s sexuality. That is not okay with me, as a rape survivor and other young women like me who aren’t ashamed of their sexuality. Slut is a term that is archaic and needs to be taken back from the community it has so often been used against.


    The slut debate has been ignited mostly by the recent Slutwalks taking place all over the country and world. Whether you think it’s a joke, empowering, or you don’t care, the discussion is happening and people are talking about “sluts.” There needs to be a greater emphasis on the double standard between female and male sexuality, that’s for sure. If being a slut means having a lot of sex and enjoying it, then I’m a damn slut.

It&#8217;s odd&#8230; In the relationships featured where the woman is taller, it tends to be by a relatively small amount - the most telling example being the Martha Vickers/ Mickey Rooney snap, where she was 1&#160;1/2&#8221; taller, while in the examples of Brigitte Neilsen/ Flava Flav, the size difference was 6 inches; L&#8217;wren Scott/ Mick Jagger, 6 inches; Jan Chamberlin/ Mickey Rooney, 4 inches; Jill Vanderberg/ Tony Curtis, 3 inches; Nicole Kidman/ Tom Cruise, 3 inches, Katie Holmes/ Tom Cruise, 2 inches. The worst example given was that of Tina Fey and her partner, where Tina is listed as an inch shorter but appears, by dint of high heeled shoes, to be taller.
On the male side, the Kris Humphris/ Kim Kardashian split is 1&#8217; 7&#8221;; Carmelo Anthony/ Lala Vasquez, 1&#8217; 2&#8221;; Shaquille O&#8217;Neal/ Shaunie Nelson, 1&#8217; 3&#8221;, Yao Ming/ Ye Li, 1&#8217; 3&#8221;, Will Smith/Jada Smith, 1&#8217; 2&#8221;.

So in short, for a woman and her husband to be considered the same size, the woman actually has to be several inches shorter, as the Tina Fey example shows? Why is a difference of 3 inches on the woman&#8217;s side as noteworthy as a difference of 12 on the man&#8217;s? 
Not to be a pedant, but are we blinded by gender roles into believing that when a woman is taller than her partner, that the relationship is some kind of novelty?

    So, it appears that a white Norwegian citizen committed the crime in Norway today. Already, the media is starting to call him deranged (which he may be, but is beside the point for right now). Why is it that everyone immediately blamed Muslims, yet no one is now blaming white people? Only Muslims are responsible for having to apologize for something another member of their faith does. Nobody demands Christians condemn anti-abortion murderers, or demand that Jews condemn violence from the settlers. This is how Orientalism functions. Arabs and Muslims are seen as  being defined by their Muslim religion, while Europeans and whites are seen as complex individuals with multiple motivations.

    Oh, my favourite.  Islamophobia and ableism wrapped up in a pretty little package.  I’m glad I got out of journalism while I could.

    I know. If it’s believed to be a Muslim, it’s part of the WAR ON FREEDOM TERROR AL QUAIDA OSAMA BIN LADEN WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

    Whereas if it’s a white guy… He’s an isolated crazed maniac.

    So Jesse, for funsies, had grabbed this book called “the power of a praying husband” from the hospital (because military hospitals are FULL of christian books… Seriously.) 

    Here’s a wonderful excerpt about women on their periods: 

    Her cycle of hormones alone is beyond comprehension. A woman can be emotionally sensitive in the days before, during, and after her monthly cycle. That leaves about three days in the middle when she is normal, and on one of those days she is ovulating, so it’s up for grabs how she is going to be that day. So I figure a guy has two good days when it’s safe. 

    How on earth is a woman supposed to run a family, a business, or heaven forbid a country if she’s THAT emotionally volatile for 94% of her life?

    Also:

    Whatever you do, don’t ask your wife, “Is it that time of the month again?” She doesn’t want her suffering to be dismissed or explained away so easily. Even if that has everything to do with it, she is not able to see that now. And it will do no good to try to force the issue.

    It also happily promotes spousal rape!

    “Men, when your wife screams “don’t touch me!” at the top of her lungs and then crawls into bed at 7pm, It really means “Don’t leave me. Come and get me. Save me. Help.”

    If she withdraws her hand when you reach out to touch it, that really means “Please keep trying. This is working. Follow the trail of depression and bad vibes. Find me, and rescue me.” 

    Holy shit! If I ever got to the point where I had to scream, scream ”don’t touch me!” at the top of my lungs, I sure as shit mean it. If you come crawling in to bed after me trying to get some after that, I’m cutting your balls off. 

    This is in the chapter called “her moods” Other chapters include “her sexuality” (which is hilarious) and “her submission” (which is just as sickening as it sounds.)

    In high school youth group I was made to read a book to Bible study called “Lady in Waiting”.  Look it up and be terrified.  I was 14.

    The guys’ Bible studies were studying serious theology and we were learning how to be good spouses as high school freshmen.  Misogyny is RAMPANT in Christian churches, especially in the South.  Some of that shit still haunts me.

White Europeans are so interesting. One day, I want to move to Europe and buy a castle and live like they do. Their lace and long dresses are so whimsical, and their belief and trust in that Pope mythology is just so deeply spiritual. I’ve always felt a deep connection with them.
