We think of Hollywood as a liberal and socially progressive land of hippies, what with its endless fundraisers and giving awards to movies that teach us that intolerance is wrong. Yet in certain ways, movies are still way behind the times.

For anyone who carps about the “liberality” of Hollywood… think again.

I don’t really understand how anyone can be shocked by this, or claim that full representation of marginalised groups has been achieved. Hollywood isn’t liberal, white men dominate nearly every movie!

Calling Brandon Teena’s character female? Haven’t we gotten past that yet?! I don’t even want to hear any of that “bla bla bla but technically…” bullcrap. Their focus on the character’s sex is totally irrelevant on every level and it’s fucking disrespectful. 

The rest of the article is very good. But this ruins it.

Worst part in my mind? If the character had been accepted as male, then it probably wouldn’t have been considered obscene.
