[snip]

the context of the situation is right there, and there is more at the link?

a suspect in a shooting had a gun, he pointed that gun at NYPD officers and did NOT fire it, and those NYPD officers instead of handling it like police are supposed to and are trained to, opened fire on a crowded street corner, executed their suspect, and accidentally injured nine people

if you read that and it sounds like “the police just shot a bunch of random people for no reason” it’s because

they DID shoot a bunch of random people for no reason

you must be [redacted slur] because no, they did not shoot random people for no reason

they may have ACCIDENTALLY shot people

but they did not aim specifically at those people with the intent of injuring them

jfc how dense can you be

yeah

you see

when someone murders somebody with a gun, they often freak out, run, and then point that gun at police officers when the police show up (they also often point that gun at themselves, or do both)

the police’s job that they are TRAINED to do is to prevent anyone else from getting shot or injured, while also taking the suspect into custody so they can be put through our justice system. they are TRAINED to do this without killing their suspect because it is wrong for police to kill suspects (unless ABSOLUTELY necessary to prevent further loss of human life)

what these two NYPD officers did was completely contrary to that. they did something extremely stupid and it got nine innocent people injured and only by sheer luck did not kill any of them, and they DID execute their suspect instead of doing their job which was to get him into custody alive

  • they should not have opened fire on a crowded corner without taking care to ensure the accuracy of their shots immediately upon seeing that a shooting suspect had a gun
  • they should not have opened fire on a crowded corner without taking care to ensure the accuracy of their shots immediately upon seeing that a shooting suspect had a gun

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Three Strikes, You’re In!
McDonald’s and the New York Police Department Launch Joint Initiative

New York, New York (March 6, 2012) - McDonald’s and the New York Police Department are launching “Three Strikes, You’re In!,” a bold new program that rewards New Yorkers for their patience with the NYPD’s “Stop and Frisk” policy.

With “Three Strikes, You’re In!,” individuals who are stopped and released three times without charge are eligible for one Happy Meal™ at participating McDonald’s stores. To receive their Happy Meal™, customers must record each stopping officer’s badge number, as well as the the time and location of the stop, on a voucher obtainable at these stores.

“This is just one way McDonald’s gives back to the communities we’re a part of,” said Mark Ramos, a McDonald’s spokesperson. “We’re proud to provide copious, satisfying, affordable food in areas that other chains don’t dare operate. With ‘Three Strikes, You’re In!’ we’re showing we also recognize these communities’ safety and civil liberties problems.”

“‘Stop and Frisk’ gets dozens of guns off the streets each year, makes respectable citizens feel secure, and lets would-be criminals know that we’re watching them,” said New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. “It generates some resentment in these low-income communities, since most of those stopped are innocent, but with the help of McDonald’s, we’re showing we understand. We can’t afford to change ‘Stop and Frisk,’ but we’re happy to compensate those who are stopped in the course of keeping the City safe.”

“Three Strikes, You’re In!” is a project of McDonald’s 365Black.com, which celebrates African American culture and achievements all year round. To download your own “Three Strikes, You’re In!” vouchers, please visit www.threestrikesyourein.org. Non-citizens and those with criminal records are ineligible.

The Cake's Okay!: Breaking: NYPD fatally shoots 18 year old in the bathroom of his home in front of 6-year-old brother.

occupyallstreets:

Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said the shooting happened following a struggle with the suspect.  He said an officer from the Special Narcotics Unit fired one time, striking 18-year-old Rahmarley Graham in the chest.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the bathroom of the apartment house where Graham lived with his mother and grandmother.

Graham was rushed to Montefiore Hospital and pronounced dead. The suspect’s mother, Constance Malcolm, claims police chased her son because he had marijuana on him and that he was unarmed.

The suspect’s mother also said that the teen’s grandmother and 6-year-old brother were inside the house at the time of the shooting.

“In the bathroom they shot him. My 6-year-old son was there and saw everything,” Malcolm said. “I’m going to get justice.”

The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is investigating the details.

Update: The NYPD has admitted that there was no struggle and the police were undercover and in plain clothes.

It’s not clear whether the officers identified themselves before pursuing Rahmarley Graham.

This marks the third young black man killed by the NYPD in last week.

Palestine Takes Over Rockefeller Center - Occupation on Ice

From Existence is Resistance:

In protest against Rockefeller Center putting up every flag at it’s center except the Palestinian flag, Existence is Resistance organized it’s 2nd annual Occupation on Ice.

The activist where split up with some skating on the ice and raising the Palestinian flag at a precise moment with those all around the center.  Palestinian flags were in full display on the skating rink and all around Rockefeller Center.  Many tourist cheered the action and were supportive.

The NYPD came and demanded that we put our flags down and leave, they said no flags were allowed but we said Rockefeller Center is filled with flags.  We are simply asking them to include the Palestinian flag amongst the flags of the world.  After some questioning and checking our id’s we were let go.

Dr. Cornell West was arrested today protesting the NYPD’s use of “stop and frisk” searches:

Princeton professor and noted activist Cornel West was arrested last weekend for protesting in front of the Supreme Court, and on Friday afternoon he repeated the experience in New York City.
West was part of a demonstration against the New York Police Department’s “stop and frisk” policy, in which individuals considered suspicious by the police are searched without due cause.
According to Salon’s Justin Elliott, the NYPD carried out 600,000 such searches last year, with 87% of the targets being black or Hispanic. Only 7% of the searches resulted in arrest, and critics of the policy say it does little to reduce crime and is probably unconstitutional.

Here’s the speech he gave moments before the arrests began:

These searches, even if they yielded arrests the majority of the time, have enormous potential for abuse - evident with the NYPD’s application of stop and frisk searches. To me, the searches are a morally reprehensible violation of a person’s civil rights.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963

Keep fighting, folks. King wrote in the same letter, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
