Fabric shopping in Ghana’s busy and bustling Makola Market

One of my favourite market-related activities in Côte d’Ivoire, after people watching and trying not to alarm small children with my epic pastiness.

When a woman makes a post describing an experience with sexual harassment and rape culture and doesn’t actually state ALL men are like that and some cis men come forward to complain about how said woman needs to stop saying they are ALL like that.

And call her a cunt.

And then whine about not being recognized as the upstanding nice guys that they are…because fuck that cunt for talking about a creeper stalking her at 2 in the morning…

Fuck you. Here’s a sticker, now shut the fuck up.

Calling people exotic is a colonialist backhanded way of saying someones attractive to you but you refuse to place them on a human level. So they can’t just be beautiful. They’re a beautiful nonwhite. They have to define your beauty by white standards.
And I used to think it was a compliment til I realized those peoples coments are always comin from loaded preconceptions that always involve me being subhuman in relation to whites.
I’ve had fellow socalled exotic people fetishize me. All it takes is believing I’m an other.

i feel like when white people who refuse to accept they made a mistake and did something racist and hurtful, and they get super defensive, it turns into this sick game for them to harass the people who called them out. like a whole ‘two can play at that game, i don’t give a fuck how you feel either’ kind of approach.

not only is it incredibly fucked up to respond to any situation that way, but racism is not a motherfucking game. being hurt or angry because someone did something racist is not equivalent to being offended because someone called you out on your shit. the reason people call out racism is because racism gets POC killed, racism gets POC harassed and abused, and racism is the dominant structure of what America is fucking built on. this is people’s lives—their personal, physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, not a game! people don’t call out racism because it’s ~fun~, they call out racism because it’s necessary for survival.

don’t wanna get called out? don’t be racist! it’s not that hard—just treat POC like fucking human beings and with respect and decency. take their feelings and words seriously.

choosing not to wear a headdress or a fake ‘afro’, or to not use a racial slur, is not hard! and it’s not up for fucking debate either—aside from the vast repository of historic information proving these activities are grounded in discourses stemming from racism & genocide, it’s as simple as respecting POC and their words when they say—no, don’t do that, it’s hurtful, and it’s not yours to take.

it’s so fucking simple! anyone who doesn’t get that is an entitled racist douche and deserves whatever kinda retribution they get.
