"They found that a year after the event, the women who were turned away from an abortion were more likely to rely on government assistance, more likely to be living beneath the poverty line, and less likely to have a full-time job than the women in the study who had obtained abortions. They also registered more anxiety a week after they were denied an abortion and reported more stress a year out. They were no more or less likely to be depressed. And women who gave birth suffered from more serious health complications—from hemorrhaging to a fractured pelvis—than the women who aborted, even later in their pregnancies.
Happy home lives also failed to materialize. The women who were turned away were more than twice as likely to be a victim of domestic violence as those who were able to abort. The researchers found that “a year after being denied an abortion, 7 percent reported an incident of domestic violence in the last six months,” compared to 3 percent of the women who received abortions. The researchers concluded that this “wasn’t because the turnaways were more likely to get into abusive relationships,” but that “getting abortions allowed women to get out of such relationships more easily.” Carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term helped abusive men stay in these women’s lives, but it didn’t encourage delinquent new dads to stick around: The researchers found that “men were no more likely to live with a turnaway who’d borne their children than they were to live with a woman who had an abortion.”
The abortion debate often focuses on a woman’s health during those first nine months. This study shows that an unwanted pregnancy can have long-lasting effects on a woman’s body and well-being far after she carries it to term."
[NB: More people than just cis women need and want access to abortion care.]
He said explaining what had happened, to family in India had been very difficult.
“Savita has a lot of doctors in her family, a lot of medical people, her uncle, her aunt, many people who are in medicine and they are all asking, ’How can this happen in the 21st century, when the medical field is so advanced?’ and ‘Why didn’t they abort her?’”
“So I had to explain the whole thing, about the law there [in Ireland] and how [when] the foetus is live… and they were all just, some people even laughed at me. ‘That’s crazy’ they said.
“And I just had to tell them, that’s the way it is, that unfortunately that’s the country we were in at the time.
“People keep asking me, ’How could they leave the womb open for two days? There is a high risk of infection there’
“A common thing I’m asked: ‘The mother’s life is a bigger life. They knew that they couldn’t save the baby. Why didn’t they look at the bigger life?’"
- Praveen Halappanavar, husband of Savita, from “We heard Ireland was a good place to have a baby” - Irish Times, 14th November 2012
Do you have an answer, Youth Defence? Any of you crazy anti-choicers out there? Anything at all to say over what your medieval insistence on robbing people of bodily autonomy and dignity is causing?
I don’t know how many of you have heard of this case, but on the 28th October an Indian dentist living here died of septicaemia because of our archaic abortion laws and lack of clear legislation.
Our government and anti-choicers love to shout about how it’s such a safe place to give birth, which is bullshit. If something goes wrong, things like this happen.
RIP Savita.(via esmeweatherwax)
News that Surprises No One:
Free birth control could prevent 1,060,370 unplanned pregnancies and 873,250 abortions a year in the U.S., according to a study.
President Obama responds to rape statement (below) from Senate candidate Richard Mourdock:
“I struggled with it myself for a long time but I came to realize, life is a gift from god and even if life begins in the horrible situation of rape it is something god intended to happen.”
Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) - Abortion never saves mother’s life; there is no such exception as life of the mother.
Abortion bans don’t need exceptions for the life of the mother because of “modern technology and science,” Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) said Thursday.
“With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance” of an abortion necessary to save the life of the mother, Walsh said after a debate with Tammy Duckworth, his Democratic opponent, according to the Chicago Tribune. “… There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”
Walsh’s comments bring to mind Missouri GOP Rep. Todd Akin’s assertion that rape exceptions aren’t necessary in abortion bans because the female body can’t get pregnant in cases of “legitimate rape.” Akin’s comments have severely damaged his effort to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
In February 2011, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) spoke on the House floor about an abortion she had because the pregnancy was threatening her life.
Walsh, whose cable news appearances and tea party rhetoric have frequently drawn headlines, was trailing Duckworth 52 percent to 38 percent in September, according to the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling. A We Ask America poll conducted earlier this week found a tiny lead for Walsh, 47 percent to 46 percent.
Why doesn’t the media call motherfuckers out on blatant lies like this. These motherfuckers say anything they want, and then the motherfuckers who vote for them repeat the same bullshit over and over - and I can’t believe this fucking tool is leading in polls.
I can’t even come up with the words to explain just how angry this statement makes me, how disappointed it makes me.
The idea that a man with no medical degree or concept of the possible pregnancy complications that can and DO happen that could kill the pregnant person gets to say something like this as nonchalantly and flippantly as he has is disgusting. The idea that he gets to say this as if he’s some kind of expert on the matter upsets me to no end.
What this quote is implying in a larger sense is that NO ONE should die, ever, because SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY. Does he not realize that people die in childbirth all the time and science and technology still can’t save them? I mean, if people are dying in childbirth then they can most certainly die during a not full-term pregnancy, too.
I don’t understand why the media absolutely REFUSES to call these assholes out. I don’t understand why he is still winning against Tammy Duckworth. I don’t understand why he hasn’t burned just like Akin did.
It’s time that the ignorance these male politicians have regarding the female reproductive system needs to be punished. You don’t get to talk about stuff you have no fucking clue about and not face the repercussions of it.
Elected officials should ave to take a basic science test in order to hold office. Nothing big, no scary-ass equations or anything, but, like like, you need to know a few things about reality.
I think, at the very least, anyone who is appointed to committees that deal with science and technology should be able to prove they are scientifically literate; ie: knowing and understanding what a credible source is and how to determine if something is a reliable source, how to read a scientific study and interpret the results to be accurate based on certain parameters, and recognizing that evolution and climate change are real, tangible things.
You can’t expect to have a committee present accurate, efficient, and helpful legislation on climate change if half the people on it refuse to even acknowledge that it’s happening and in the process screwing over the rest of the country while we face the real and tangible effects of it with mass flooding, drought, tornadoes, blizzards, and severe hurricanes.
I also believe that EVERY politician elected to a public office like the House and Senate should be required to take and pass the same test we require people to take in order to gain citizenship. EVERY politician, maybe every time they are up for re-election and if they don’t pass it after a second try, they are ineligible to run in that election.
[Image: Two teddy bears hugging. Text reads: An abortion is NOT a lesson OR a punishment. \end transcription]
An abortion is something that you need to do sometimes. It is not a penance. It is not a “learning experience” or a “teachable moment” because it is ok to need an abortion. It is ok to have an abortion and you are not doing anything wrong by getting one. You are not a bad, stupid, or irresponsible person because you have to do this! Pro-Choice Teddy Bear supports your choice to end your pregnancy.
Okay, I fixed it for reals this time.
but you made it wrong
you ruined it.
you don’t get to take someone bravely speaking about their illegal abortion and ruin it.
Oh my god, the anti-choice movement has officially come full circle.
They’re officially acknowledging that they don’t have a leg to stand on unless they blatantly alter facts and misrepresent the truth.
Thanks for doing my job for me, guys.
Another banner day! Bolded for emphasis. Who cares about real women’s lived experiences when you can just, like, cross it all out until it agrees with you?
Celebrating sex without pills, rubber, or chemicals! Just straight up love.
FUCK OFF BACK TO HELL FUCK OFF BACK TO HELL FUCK OFF BACK TO HELL
get your anti-contraception, anti-sex-positivity, astro-turfing, quasi-religious bullshit off my bit of the internet
you’re not a “movement”, you’re a religiously-driven brigade that says shit like:
If anything can be said of our generation, it’s this: We want sexy back. Our parent’s generation, well, they lost it. They delivered to us a world with sky-high rates of divorce, abortion, and STDs; a world bored with sex and bored with romance; a world in which more and more people are turning to pornography to find sexual satisfaction; a world in which 1 in 5 women report being sexual assaulted, and the human body — the sexiest thing in the universe — is used to sell cars.
except you’re trying now to deliver it in a ‘I’m oh so down with the kids’ way by hijacking every meme under the sun.
I. want. you. off. tumblr. now. followers, rally?
Equating Pro-Choice with Pro-Abortion makes no sense.
If you’re gonna call Pro-Choicers “Pro-Abortion”, then you’re also gonna have to call us “Pro-Adoption” and “Pro-Parenthood”.
See, the thing about being pro-choice, is we don’t actually advocate for one specific option. Yes, we want to keep abortion legal so it’s therefore safe and no pregnant person has to die while seeking an abortion. But no one who is pro-choice actually tells anyone who is pregnant what they should or shouldn’t do. That would defeat the purpose of our position of being pro-choice.
We are pro-choice because we want people to be able to make their own decisions and their own choices about their bodies and lives.
Why is this hard?
MINORITY PRIVILEGE: UNPACKING THE NEW INVISIBLE KNAPSACK
(…blah blah bullshit bullshit bullshit)
YOU CAN NOT ACHIEVE EQUALITY THROUGH PRIVILEGE, REPARATIONS AND BENEFIT FOR ANY RACE OR GENDER. IF YOU WANT EQUALITY, THEN ACT AS AN EQUAL, ANY USAGE OR SEEKING OF THE FORMER ENFORCE RACIAL SUPERIORITY OR ACCEPTANCE OF INFERIORITY.
This morning was an especially difficult exercise in self-control and anger management. This post will be far shorter than the last one, because I really don’t want to talk about it more than strictly necessary because it is disgusting, but I feel like this nasty behaviour needs to be exposed.
Before we continue, while I didn’t include a trigger warning, anyone sensitive to miscarriages or anything along those lines may not want to continue reading.
Today I met one of the protesters, Mary. She’s a chaser, she’ll follow women out of their car, she’ll stand by the car door so it’s hard for them to get out. Well, the young woman in question today wasn’t brooking any of Mary’s nonsense, so when Mary pulled her standing-by-the-door shtick, she opened the door roughly against her. And as soon as Mary began talking, she hauled off and smacked her right across the face.
I heard about all of this through hearsay (and also about how the woman’s companion chased Mary around the parking lot) and while there was a tiny voice saying “Yay!” in my head, my heart also sunk—because I’m learning that any action you take against these people, even in the face of cruelty, will be used against you. I’m learning that as an Escort, it’s my job to hopefully try and calm these situations down—not encourage them. …But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t admire the family giving Mary a hard time.
Anyway, the young girl was with her mother and father, and the mother was screaming at all the protesters who nearly created a mob. Another Escort leaned close to me and said, “It’s a dead fetus.”
I was shocked to my core. The family, even the girl herself, had been yelling this to the protesters, that she wasn’t there for an abortion, but it was falling on deaf ears. Instead of listening to the heartache of the young girl and shutting up and letting her get the treatment she deserved, they treated her like a sinner—a murderer.
More concrete, real-life evidence that these antis don’t give a fuck about the people going into the clinics, about people PERIOD, they don’t listen, and they have absolutely no love or heart for anyone but themselves, despite how badly they want you to believe otherwise.
Look at this adorable little chick isn’t it just…oh wait.
Fetus =/= Baby.
That is what we call an unfertilized egg. What your looking at is what would have nourished the chick, if the chick was in there. Essentially, that egg is ‘chicken period.’
However, that is a chicken prepared as Balut. (Or a duck. The description wouldn’t say. I think the point stands.)
Therefore, ^Chicken inside egg = human being inside womb. Fetus = Human being.
The dumb thing is, I don’t even need to go down this route.
I don’t give a shit what you think it is inside a womb. Even if it’s a fully grown fucking adult, if it has to leech off a woman to survive, then she has every right to stop it doing so.
Okay, so you admit that a fetus is a human being. Moving on:
if it has to leech off a woman to survive, then she has every right to stop it doing so.
Actually, that is not true. To be able to claim that, you would need to claim that a fetus’s presence in the uterus is unlawful. However, because the woman in most cases acted in such a way that would cause the pregnancy, if the fetus’s presence there is unlawful, then the woman is an accessory to the crime through criminal facilitation.
Furthermore, when you say a fetus leeches off the mother, you are insinuating the fetus is a parasite. This is obviously not true given the fact that the woman provides the fetus with a womb in which to stay. There is no case of parasitism where the host prepares a place specifically for the parasite. The claim that the fetus is a parasite is thus severely compromised.
Finally, in no other example of human relations can someone be killed for ‘leeching’ off another. If you grow tired of taking care of your already born child, you are not allowed to take him out back and shoot him. You are allowed to ‘remove’ him from your home through adoption, but you are not allowed to shoot him. You cannot claim abortion is like putting a child up for adoption because abortion kills the child.
Why did you just post something about Catholics being pro-abortion when you clearly aren’t?
Of course I admit it’s of human form, it can only become a human. It’s not going to turn into an alligator at nine months is it? Does that make it the same as a fully developed, born human? Certainly not.
Firstly, sometimes the woman didn’t consent to even having sexual intercourse. Your argument fails to really address why you feel that rape victims, as well as those pregnant by consensual sex should be forced to carry their pregnancy to term. Secondly, consent for sex is not consent for pregnancy. Thirdly, consent for pregnancy can be withdrawn. Circumstances change and so do minds. This is why we call ourselves pro-choice, because this is so wrapped up in choice, consent, and personal ownership of you own body. It is so important to empower women with the knowledge that consent is given on a second by second basis, and can be entirely validly and rightly be withdrawn from a situation where seconds before consent was total. When that consent it withdrawn, whether it be for sex, pregnancy, or anything you care to think of, whatever is no longer being consented to must be stopped. I don’t know if you identify as a feminist, but if you don’t agree with that key tenant of it, you better stop.
You argue it’s not leeching because the woman voluntarily provides her womb to the child? Don’t really want to state the obvious here, but if she’s seeking an abortion, she doesn’t want to provide her womb (And not just her womb, her entire body is involved in the process of gestation) then it isn’t voluntary. She is not ‘preparing a place’, she’s desperate to have that place back. Just because something can inhabit a part of a woman’s body does not mean it’s welcome.
I said nothing about adoption, so I don’t see the relevance.
Also you’re wrong, there is no human relation quite like this. This is not taking care of, it is physically offering yourself as a host body, and in no other medical situation does that occur. If you woke up tomorrow with a stranger attatched to your kidneys that you have to offer routine human dialysis for, you would be pretty unimpressed. It’s difficult to compare physical leeching to anything else because there is no like situation in the world.
When you’re told you have to provide a host body to keep something alive that you don’t want to, and still go through with it, then we’ll talk.
