Here I am on the Badge Post bandwagon (here are Felflowne's and Zelly’s)

Not gonna lie, I’ve not been doing the multiple cons per year for that long, so my count’s not great. What I will say is that I feel I’ve covered a good cross section of the scene time-wise.

  1. Ayacon 2005
  2. Amecon 2005
  3. Auchinawa 2006
  4. Amecon 2007
  5. Amecon 2008
  6. Ayacon 2009
  7. Kitacon 2011
  8. Ayacon 2011
  9. Kitacon 2012
  10. Amecon 2012
  11. Gemucon 2013
  12. Ayacon 2013

Con Burnout

ctgraphy:

Question for everyone: How do you prevent con burnout? Or, if you HAVE burned out before, what did you do to make yourself feel better?

(Working on a blog post, so thanks for any thoughts!)

Well obviously, cons in the UK are different than in the US…

My first con was Ayacon in 2005 - way to start on a high. University of Warwick Arts Centre is the best campus venue in the UK. Amazing venue, amazing amount of space! I swear I didn’t go into the same room twice over the weekend. Spent a shitton of money, met new people, saw new anime (it was the last event in the UK that showed fansubs - i.e. the last event with a worthwhile screening schedule) and attended many, many events. I attended the Fanfiction Writing panel! All in all, an amazing time. I still have some of the Doujin I bought that weekend too :p

The year after that was Amecon 2006… And that wasn’t bad. Leicester Uni was slightly more convenient than University of Warwick, only being a little ways from the town centre, and also a large supermarket, and I was lucky to spend the whole weekend hanging out and making funny noises with the voice acting funsters, but it was hotter, noisier, more difficult to get around, and while a good experience, not as much fun as Aya… Of course, it was around this time that it was revealed that Aya had been shut down.

Auchinawa 2006 I won’t even touch because I had a totally skewed experience of that event compared to the average congoer. Not in a bad way, but I can’t really write about it.

Amecon 2007 was where I started burning out. Read: fewer con-friends, less/no money to spend in the dealer’s room, fewer events and less interest in them… More drinking. More and more drinking. Exacerbated, in my mind, by the fact that Amecon as a whole was waning from running two years in a row. And the first year they had the “Cosplay Ball” or formal event as the last event of the sunday night, from 7pm onwards, with a nice note that if you hadn’t brought a formal outfit, then you might as well leave after the closing ceremony. It was, though, the first time I met my delightful other half (although I was so drunk I have absolutely no memory.) I mean, I walked back to digs on sunday night with a damn traffic bollard! Still don’t have a good idea of that happened.

Amecon 2008 was a trainwreck. Changes to the campus made it difficult to, for example… Leave the building if there was a fire. It was probably the last time I spent any money at a convention dealer’s room - and I won’t lie when I say I was drunk at that event from the minute I picked up my badge, essentially. There were good points but it was mainly lows…

Aya Again 2009 was probably my lowest point. It was pretty rough as a con, although I had a lot of fun, I was pretty much drinking the whole event, once again… It didn’t hurt, of course, that this was the year where they had £1 pints. Yes, taking a table up and working your way through £20 of £1 pints sounds like a good idea, and you will meet some people and have some fun, but I won’t romanticise it by pretending that it was healthy behaviour, that it was more fun than participating. I didn’t even know I was burnt out at that point.

I missed out on Amecon 2010 because of 2006/7/8. That year, Zelly and I got together and we started working out 2011’s events - starting with Kitacon 2011.
I won’t say that Kitacon 2011 cured me of being burned out. What I will say is that Kitacon 2011 is the first time in years that I attended a con and attended events, met people, and just had fun. It was a good time.

Ayacon 2011 was pretty much back to 2009 for me… I had it so ingrained that conventions were for “socialising” - read “drinking” that I hardly attended any events. I can’t remember if I attended the opening ceremony. Needless to say, this was a stressful event, since this was the time when the potential for Team Neko as a serious entity came bubbling to the surface.

Flash forward to Kitacon 2012 and I was Press Badge’d (although not for myself, purely as backup) and attending events, and even though I was drinking (note: Hoegaarden is an excellent morning beer) I was attending events… Including accidentally taking over the Ellen Mclain Q&A which I have to admit is a high point in my convention-going career.

Flash forward to Amecon 2012, and I’m attending events, I’m taking photos (albeit with a shitty compact that I got free from work) and I feel involved. I’m attending events, drinking a lot less than I expected - I’m even attending parties, which is not something I generally relish. Team Neko is coming along well. Sunday night, I come down off the balcony we were filming from (it was ludicrously warm up there) and grab a couple of pints… Finishing one off, and knowing I was heading back up to the balcony, I ended up giving the other pint away. And since then I haven’t had anywhere near as much to drink at cons.

Play Expo 2012 and I’m running around for the first time with a DSLR and I am loving the fact that I can take pictures at all. Days are long, the floor is noisy, and there’s not really much happening, but again, I felt so involved that it was all good.

And so we’re up to date. Gemucon 2013 at the Brittania hotel was actually awesome. I attended events I didn’t even want to attend because they had to be attended, they had to be recorded or photographed. I think I drank a total of 12 beers over the 3 days of the convention (and 12 beers at the precon.)

So what is my advice when it comes to con burnout? As a former burnout myself, I can say that what caused my burnout was the belief that I had to attend cons because I attended cons. I would have dropped out of the community entirely after 2010 if Zelly and I hadn’t gotten together - I have a friend who only attends Ayacon after 2008, and I don’t know if she’ll attend any other conventions at this point.

So to avoid burnout:

I’d say the cure for my burnout was definitely becoming engaged. Knowing that I was there with a “job” to do suddenly made all the difference.

Everyone who attends cons of any sort needs to read this. Period.

Okay everyone, I’m what the Scots would describe as a “well-kent” face in the con scene, and I’d like everyone to know - follower or not - if you are being harassed, and you need help, and you see me, approach me and I will do all I can. Whether that involves physically interjecting or even just providing you with an out, do not hesitate.

Also both of us at Team Neko are friendly nice people and we love to meet new folks!

Just so folk within the UK Con scene know. We are super friendly and will talk to anyone about just about anything! All you have to do is come over and introduce yourself! We know that is easier said that done…but please know that you CAN do that with us without fear.

We want folk to know (especially people who are new to the scene) that they have at least 2 friendly faces they can approach if they ever feel worried, lonely, uncomfortable, or just plain scared about anything. We will welcome you with open arms and help introduce you to some of the most fantastic people you will ever meet in the con scene. We will listen to your problems and advise you if ask.

We know how intimidating it can be at your first convention. Especially since most groups of people are very well established. We know what an overwhelming feeling of happiness you can get when you finally make a friend.

We’re pretty easily recognized, especially since we don’t cosplay.

Zelly is the girl running around with a video camera in her hand and usually has big bouncy hair, bright colourful make up and accessories and an insane laugh that can be heard for miles.

XC is the big tall guy with long dreadlocks and beard. He will most likely be wearing some sort of vest along with his trademark khaki shorts…that are actually more patches than they are shorts material. He’ll have a big ass camera around his neck and a pint in one hand, large tin of energy drink in the other.

And of course, we will both be wearing bright green Team Neko badges.

So… This is a photo of me from 5 years ago…
Yeah, I don’t really remember why I had a traffic bollard either. That thing was bloody heavy and a pain in the arse and I didn’t get to take it home.

Some AMAZING cosplays this year! This was the event that made me realise I need to get a proper camera. That balcony was tough to shoot from with my compact!

Anime Con Meme

1. How did you find out about anime conventions?
The year was 2003, I was studying Computing at Uni. One of my close friends was an English bloke named Jim originally from Melton Mowbray… Summer of 2003, he went away to Ayacon. I was so jealous of the swag and such that I made him promise to take me along the next time.

2. What and where was your first convention?
Ayacon ‘05, University of Warwick in Coventry.

3. How old were you at your first convention?
It’s 2012 now… I was… about… 19?

4. Did you cosplay at your first convention, and if so, as who?
I did! The single most un-recognisable, obscure cosplay ever…
In the anime version of Martian Successor Nadesico, there is the parody/fictional series Gekiganger. Within that fictional series, there are three Gekiganger robots, each with a pilot. I cosplayed the pilot of Gekigan Tank, Akira.

5. How many conventions have you’ve attended presently?
Aya ‘05, Ame ‘06, Auchinawa ‘06, Ame ‘07, Ame ‘08, Aya ‘09, Kita ‘11, Aya ‘11… And maybe others I can’t remember.

6. What was your favorite convention and why?
It’s tough to say… I honestly enjoy conventions a lot more now than I did at first, but for different reasons. The first few times, conventions were all about running wild, buying things, etc. etc. etc. Now, I can enjoy a convention just hanging out with friends, drinkin’ beers, and… Wandering around with a gun to Justin Bieber’s head… The way I see it is that I’m always reminded of a CSI episode centred around a murder at a convention for little people… There’s a moment where it’s stated that the people have to squeeze a lifetime of experiences into the length of the convention, because it’s the only time they can. At first, that’s how I felt about conventions, but now, I see them as something apart, a holiday and break.

7. List all your cosplays that you’ve cosplayed in the past (that you can remember) and what one is your favorite?
Akira (Gekiganger)
Kasanoda (Ouran High School Host Club)

8. If you have a dream convention that you want to attend, what is it?
If I could get Kitacon’s atmosphere, and Aya ‘09’s bar prices, I’d be a happy man.

9. Do you attend convention events, such as panels, karaoke, etc.?
Occasionally. If I think a panel’s going to be entertaining, interesting, or just something different, then I’ll attend. Sadly, I feel that the problem with events is that there doesn’t feel like much I haven’t seen before… Which is where The Geekton Factor comes in ;)

10. Have you’ve ever entered masquerade? And if so as who and did you win?
Nope, and I don’t intend to.

11. What do you usually buy in the dealer’s room? If so, what do you buy?
Pictures of Jars of Jam

12. Do you buy anything in the artist alley? If so, what do you buy?
Pictures of Jars of Jam. Long story short, around Ame ‘07, I noticed the artists in the dealer’s room taking requests. My first thought was to troll/parody the OC’s they were having to draw so much - resulting in a cat/wolf/fox/mermaid/octopus/etc etc etc abomination with 16 different colour eyes etc. etc. etc.
And then, I just figured it’d be more fun to get something completely off the wall, and somehow, Jam had become a meme among my friends… And after the first couple of times I commissioned jars of jam, I noticed how much fun the artists were having with it. I pay a fair price that some people would take advantage of, I let the artist draw them however they’d like. It always puts a smile on people’s faces, especially if they’ve had a commision from me before - or know someone who has. The folder is currently at 17 pictures, excluding the ones from Ame ‘07 and Ame ‘08 which were meant to be scanned and put online.

13. What was the longest-traveled convention you’ve driven to or flown to?
Ame ‘08 is definitely the one that took me longest to get to. I was meant to be on the train for 8am at Glasgow Central… When it was cancelled, I was sent to Edinburgh, but flooding meant the train took about 1 1/2 hours, and the train I got on was literally the last one out of Scotland. It also had Zelly and the proto-Team Neko aboard, which was cool, although I didn’t really get to speak to them. Once we got moving from Edinburgh we were about 6 hours, including a stop in Leeds. It was just a massive mess.

14. Have you met your favorite English seiyuu?
If I know who the voice actor is, then I’m not paying attention to the character.

15. Do you generally go to conventions with friends? Or your special someone? Or both?
I meet my friends at the convention. I’ve travelled and stayed with friends in the past, but for now I’m happier travelling with Zelly rather than having to babysit anyone.

16. Have you’ve met a special someone at a convention and then hooked up there, or after?
Zelly’s already told the story… But what’s funnier is that I didn’t know we’d met at Ame ‘07 for years. I was colossally drunk… I think the picture she took of me then (ancient history, I mean, my shorts were still mostly the original material, at least recognisably so) is hilarious.
The fact that we’d gotten on so well at Aya ‘09 was what gave me the confidence to ask Zelly out after. And the rest… Is history.

17. Do you regret going to any specific convention? And if so, why?
Probably Auchinawa… I was living with 2 members of the committee, had seen all the planning, but in the end, it was still a matter of 18-hour days gophering, not nearly enough drinking, first-in-last-out type shit. Plus, I was in a shitty “relationship” at the time, and trying to make that work… The experience just turned me off conventions in Scotland period.

18. What conventions do you have planned for next year?
Kitacon in April, Amecon in August.

19. Have you’ve cosplayed your dream cosplay yet? If so, who?
"Dream Cosplay" ?
Probably Dave Lister XD Not done it yet, but people confuse my clothes for a costume, so it’s all one really. I’d also love to do post-apocalyptic type costumes.

20. Do you go by your forum name/pen name/nick name at cons?
I do now. Aya ‘05 badge name was Guy Daigoji, and after that was Yojimbo up until Ayacon ‘11, when I decided to go XtremeCaffeine universally.

21. Do you have a convention that’s on your birthday?
No, and I wouldn’t want their to be one. Since I’d be too busy partying at the convention to be partying for my birthday!

22. What is your current favorite anime/manga? Have you’ve cosplayed it yet?
Current favourite Manga is Akira, just plowed through the whole thing and I wish they’d made the movie the 24-hour long epic the story would have required. Current favourite Anime is… I’m not sure. Haven’t watched anything newer than Highschool Of The Dead, which was kinda cool, but not as good as the Manga, just wish it would update more often.

23. Do you make your own cosplays, thrift them, or get them commissioned, etc?
No cosplays.

24. Do you have any retired cosplays? If any, why are they retired?
All of them, because I didn’t like them.

25. What cosplays do you have planned for next year? Or if there’s alot of them, what series?
Nooooooooooo cosplaaaaaaaaaays

26. Did you like this meme?
Too much cosplay :P

27. Are you bored out of your mind because your not at a con?
No, because I have Zelly, and also because I’ve learned that cons are fun, but you can’t sit around all year waiting for them. You have to make your own fun, do your own things.

28. When is your next con?
Kitacon, April. I should probably start packing soon.

29. Have you’ve started any of your cosplays for your next con?
Noooooooooooooooooo habla cosplay

30. Anything else I should know about you?
I’ve got 8 piercings, including nipples & genital. Two tattoos, including the caffeine molecule on my chest. I’ve been wearing the same hacked-off combats shorts since at least 2007, although I’m only sure on that date because that’s as far back as I have photographic proof of. I enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction and Nerf guns. If you see me at a UK convention, say hello.
