So one time my friend Ianthe made this petition.

halewolves:

The petition was written in an attempt to stop Illinois State University’s resident racist moron from representing ISU at KCACTF, where he’s being recognised for Naomi Iizuka’s “Anon(ymous),” which, if you can stomach the irony, focuses on racism, immigration, etc. in America. Why is this so ironic, you might ask? Because the student, Robert Hornbostel, annually celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. day by throwing a party that perpetuates racist stereotypes, in which he asks those who wish to attend to bring things like “grape drink,” watermelon, cornbread, fried chicken… you get the idea.

Aside from Ianthe being attacked for daring to create this petition, Robert Hornbostel has now threatened legal action on my friend, which aside from being so utterly ridiculous that I have to laugh about it, is so missing the point that I can’t even begin to fathom where the hell he got his brain. He would rather contact his lawyers than simply apologise for his disgusting party. He chooses to exercise his white privilege and continue to say that he’s really not doing any harm when the comments on this petition prove otherwise. When Black people are telling you that your racism is hurting them, you need to sit down, shut up, and take notes. When you’re riding the back of a racist society and perpetuating stereotypes under the guise of celebrating one of the most important Civil Rights figures in American history, you really ARE causing harm.

I don’t go to ISU. I don’t know Robert Hornbostel. My only connection to this whole thing (which has exploded into something I don’t think Ianthe expected but which I am so proud of xer for) is only through Ianthe. But we all have a choice to stand up against injustice, and that’s what Ianthe’s doing and that’s what I’m doing. Please sign this petition. Please read Ianthe’s blog where you can find updates on the situation. Please don’t let Robert Hornbostel get away with racism.

Racism.

reverseracism:

stopbeingidiots:

My last rant kind of inspired this post. I have a lot of opinions about this topic, but I will try my best to keep this short. I am not racist, in any way. But, one thing I cannot stand is hearing things like “Why wasn’t there a black person in this movie? Racist!” Like, how is that even logical? Do you know how people would react if white people were like “Why isn’t there any white people in this movie? Racist!” they would get called racist, and get a shitload of insults over it.

I know I’m going to get “Omg ur white-privilege is showing!!!” but I honestly couldn’t care less what anyone thinks, because this is my opinion. In my eyes, we should all be seen as equal people. I don’t care if you’re white, gay, straight, black, transgender, etc. I just see you as another person, and I’m not going to judge you on those type of things. I just can’t stand things like this. I’m sorry, but not everything is racist. If a person of color isn’t cast in a movie, I highly doubt it’s because of their skin color.

Another thing that bothers me is how people act like someone cannot be racist against a white person. Are you kidding me orr? Racism is disliking/harassing a person because of their skin color. It’s not listed in the dictionary as “A white person disliking/harassing a person of color because of their skin.” I’m sorry if this comes off as rude, but I’m just being honest. I honestly have experienced a lot of things because of the color of my skin, believe it or not. I grew up in a neighborhood where there weren’t that many white people. In my classes, there were maybe two other white girls. All three of us experienced a lot of cruel things, just because we were “crackers” and “white trash” now, what is that? It’s hating someone solely because of their skin color, therefore it’s racism. I didn’t complain about it, though. The other girls did, and they pulled the “White people can’t experience racism.” card.

I’m cutting this short, all I’m saying is, we’re all people, and even though we shouldn’t, we can ALL experience racism.

-Kat.

“If a person of color isn’t cast in a movie, I highly doubt it’s because of their skin color.”

Being that 69% of roles are set aside for white men while, depending on the group, less than 10%, at most, are set aside for people of color, I’d say that you can doubt all you like, but you’re only doubting reality.

"Stay Away From My Elves": Racism in Epic Fantasy Fandoms-Damned if you Do, Damned if You Don’t.

Wistful POC make a photoset POC fancast for Lord of the Rings. White people :

Like I said before, I think adding poc into things JUST for the purpose of inclusion is just as bad. But I don’t think adding them in to a fantasy story that has been around for decades with a very strong and dedicated following is the right way to do it. This isn’t about racism, this is about fucking with my fandom.

Stay away from my elves.

image

An author of color writes a book featuring POC protagonists. White People:

I’m all for being happy that a black person wrote a fantasy book with black protagonists, just as themselves, largely (though not entirely) away from any color related power struggles, letting them exist on their own merit and showing the obvious fact that fantasy characters don’t all have to be pale.

It would be nice if the responses weren’t “FUCK YEAR! FINALLY A BOOK FOR US! TAKE THAT YOU HORRIBLE, BORING WHITEYS”.

However I do fail to see how ‘race isn’t a conflict’ as someone (I think) mentioned above, when it’s really just about black supremacy, not white supremacy. BUT HEY DON’T MIND ME. I prefer not to read fantasy with an agenda, even if it’s in my favor.

I’ll reserve my adulation for a black writer who is above being racist entirely. I do not withhold judgment based on skin color.

Making it clear that White villains are only bad if the Protagonists are POC:

You know, I kinda have a problem with this, as well. I’m white, but one thing I’ve made a major point in my life is to never see skin color. If you had told me this book was part of a wonderful fantasy series that would have been fine. If you had told me the protagonists were people of color and the antagonists where white: still fine. But you had to drive home the thought that it’s so superior just for those reasons, and that’s unsettling.

A white author writes black characters which are subsequently whitewashed by white fans. White people:

I mean seriously, you SJS Skidmarks whine and bitch about how authors don’t include enough “non-white” characters in their books. Then when an author DOES do so, you whine and bitch because they aren’t the star or the main character. And when an author makes one a pretty important character you complain about THAT.

Seriously, kindly write “racist” on a club and beat yourself to death with it. It’s what you want, anyways, but no one would likely care enough to humor you. You can make the club any color you want, though I think we can all guess what color it’d be. Funny thing is, regardless of that? It’d still be stupid and incredibly ironic.

Ursula K. LeGuin writes a Black main character in The Left Hand of Darkness, a seminal Gender studies text and all-around awesome sci fi book. White people:

I take it that everyone remembers the racist shitstorm over Rue and Thresh? No?

“Naturally Thresh would be a black man,” tweeted someone who called herself @lovelyplease.

“I was pumped about the Hunger Games. Until I learned that a black girl was playing Rue,” wrote @JohnnyKnoxIV.

“Why is Rue a little black girl?” @FrankeeFresh demanded to know. (she appended her tweet with the hashtag admonishment #sticktothebookDUDE.)

“Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the little blonde innocent girl you picture,”@sw4q

“Kk call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn’t as sad,” wrote @JashperParas

But wait! Let’s not forget the Fan-made movie that was uploaded and waddled its way around the internet well before the ACTUAL film came out, which has OVER 3 MILLION VIEWS AND FEATURES A BLONDE, WHITE RUE, AS WELL AS DOZENS OF COMMENTS REGARDING HOW MUCH “BETTER” IT IS THAN THE ACTUAL HOLLYWOOD MOVIE

image

image

According to the filmmaker:

I know that Rue is described as being dark skinned in the book, but I wanted to show Savanna’s acting. I think she would make a good Prim though.

The commenters:

Everytime I watch this, I always think it was so much better than the movie. This vid is just epic. It captures the whole feeling of the book. It’s realistic, and for that reason it’s completely awesome.

Personally, I like this version better than the one in the movie. It’s more emotional, it feels more realistic, and the actors here acted better, especially Rue.

Why is this better than the movie?! I cried! I didn’t cry for the movie.

This was more sad when rue died than in the actual movie! still loved it though!

rue is so beautiful

Okay, so….

This is the best gif set ever.

And then theres that one ^

What the fuck is wrong with twerkin? I’m not here for your cracka ass gifset of dances those honkies are doin. Most of that shit is 1. Bland as fuck 2. Stolen from black and brown folks and watered down so they stupid asses can do it.

You mad cuz y’all no ass having muthafuckas know no matter how hard you try, twerkin is something you will never fully master.

Sit the fuck down with this antiblack bullshit.

I swear to GOD white people gonna make me lose my mind!!!!!!!!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHH they tried to shit on twerking but look at those boring-ass-fuck dance moves in the gifset. I’d rather twerking to that watered down boring bullshit any day.

I can tell you from the top of my head that the 1921-28 GIF are dances stolen from the Senegalese slaves brought to Charleston, SC, who did a dance called “Sunu” with the exact same moves.

White people then took it, watered it down to something they can do (the actual dance moves are way more animated and energetic), and decided to popularize it.

1930-47 are dances stolen from West Africa once again.

1957-67 stolen from Black dance clubs of that era.

1992-98 at this point white people were just stealing from Black folks openly.

2006-2012 white people have completely appropriated Black culture in order to keep themselves entertained…and still look silly doing it.

…which is why when white people come to my mother’s dance workshops they can never keep up.

That’s fine. I don’t like y’all getting in my way anyway.

Welp.

And 20 years from now there will be a gifset of some assless white girls “twerking”.

yep…….

everything but the first one is stolen black dance…thanks for chronicling your theft

Everything I wanted to say but couldn’t find the words for.

Alright, I’m going to start by saying that I find some of the comments above highly disturbing. It’s unsettling to me that people are making a big deal about the dancers being white. Unsettling enough that I have to get on my soapbox.

Just because something is derived from a certain culture, does not mean that people not from said culture are not allowed to take part in it. I’m a young, Caucasian female, and I’ve been a swing dancer and a Lindy Hopper for going on three years. Am I not allowed to dance Lindy Hop because it’s a dance that was created by African Americans in Harlem, or am I just not allowed to post a gifset of my white partner and I?

What I find upsetting is the double standard on issues like this. I’ve heard quite a few racist comments throughout my life, and they all sicken me, no matter which race is being targeted.  If these dancers or the creator of this gifset are being verbally attacked for white people doing moves that black people created where does it stop? If that’s the rule then I’m not allowed to post a video of me doing the Shim Sham, because Frankie Manning, the creator, was African American, no one but white people can post pictures taken of them reading Harry Potter because it was written by a Caucasian (by this rule, that goes for Asians and people from the Middle East too). If an African American is singing a Beatles song, are they stealing the Caucasian culture? No, they’re taking part in something they enjoy. Race has nothing to do with entertainment.

I know that some people are going to say “Oh, you’re just a whiny white girl, you don’t know shit.” And that’s precisely my point. I have no tolerance for any sort of racist comments, and that’s what I see these comments complaining that the dancers are white as. The term that is used for this sort of racism is called “Reverse Racism” but I’ve always hated that term. There’s no such thing as “reverse racism” Racism is racism.

Racism: The Word and the Definition

racismschool:

There is an awful lot of talk about the word racism. What it means, who has the correct definition. Who can or can not be a racist. Thus far, I haven’t found a better definition than this.

Still, I was curious about the word itself. I was pretty shocked by what I found.

The dictionary was not where the word was born. In fact, the word (at first) had nothing to do with our current ideas on racism. It was first found in a book called “The coming American Fascism” published in 1936. The second time, was also in a book. It was called “Racism” published in 1938 and this is what made the word popular.

The interesting part was the actual meaning of the word when it was created. It did stand for separation but not of ethnic race. Not at first anyway. It was about Religious race. It was made famous because the topic of the book was the study of sex. The word racism was being used to describe how (according to the book) Christians were more “Uptight and repressive” about sex. It was about sexual liberation. Then, the word racism was used to compare Socialists groups to other groups. Finally, it was used in ethnic races.

Even when talking about ethnic races, the word was not used as it is today. It was used as a negative to describe your enemy’s ideas. Even when your enemy’s ideas were about things other than race. It was eventually called “The useless word” because everyone was using it against anyone that didn’t agree with them.

Here’s the REALLY interesting part…”Racism” as we know it today came from the word “Racialism.” Why is this interesting? Well, it’s because the definition, the one in the dictionary today, was coined in 1907. NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SEVEN!

This is the definition racists use as proof that everyone can be racist? Really? No…REALLY? Can you think of a reason THIS particular definition at THAT particular time, might be fucking WRONG?

I’m just gonna leave this here for you to digest.

Jesus.
Even when I think I can, I can’t.

“A black female meteorologist has been fired from the ABC affiliate in Shreveport, La., she told Journal-isms, because she responded to a racial remark posted by a viewer on the station’s Facebook page.

KTBS-TV’s action against Rhonda Lee followed a previous response by Lee to a viewer who questioned whether she should wear her short Afro, suggesting she put on a wig or grow more hair.”

Blatant racism. I hope she sues the drawls off of them.

The patience and professionalism of this woman in dealing with blatant racists should have merited a raise.

This is what she was fired for responding to:

On Oct. 1, a viewer identified as Emmitt Vascocu wrote, “the black lady that does the news is a very nice lady.the only thing is she needs to wear a wig or grow some more hair. im not sure if she is a cancer patient. but still its not something myself that i think looks good on tv. what about letting someone a male have waist long hair do the news.what about that (cq).”

Lee replied the same day, “Hello Emmitt—I am the ‘black lady’ to which you are referring. I’m sorry you don’t like my ethnic hair. And no I don’t have cancer. I’m a non-smoking, 5’3, 121 lbs, 25 mile a week running, 37.5 year old woman, and I’m in perfectly healthy physical condition.

“I am very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair. For your edification: traditionally our hair doesn’t grow downward. It grows upward. Many Black women use strong straightening agents in order to achieve a more European grade of hair and that is their choice. However in my case I don’t find it necessary. I’m very proud of who I am and the standard of beauty I display. Women come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty. Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society. Little girls (and boys for that matter) need to see that what you look like isn’t a reason to not achieve their goals.

“Conforming to one standard isn’t what being American is about and I hope you can embrace that.

Thank you for your comment and have a great weekend and thank for watching.

oh

OH

yea, she shouldn’t be fired over that response. they make it sound like she cussed somebody out.

heh, to white folks that is cussing out. you know a black woman is automatically hostile as long as she has the temerity to check a white person, no matter what her actual tone or words are

commanderbishoujo: I’d appreciate it if you didn’t generalize another race. I agree with what I think you were trying to get across, but tossing out a couple of snide remarks in the middle of it won’t fly. Personally I suggest that instead of attacking whites, you attack actual racists. You know, the bad guys.

commanderbishoujo says “no matter what white people think Black women are hostile”

white person: why are you Black women so hostile??????

LIKE IS ANYONE ELSE SEEING WHAT I SEE PLEASE?

that’s exactly what i’m seeing.

because “hostile” and “disagreeable” always mean “reacting to racist oppressive bullshit in any manner that is not a predetermined level of politeness that you can never achieve”.

LOL so side note from all this election biznatch on my dash

but like I was catching up with this friend from high school

who was telling me about this simple bitch that we both ended up hating (I forget why he ended up hating her; I ended up hating her cos this ugly white bitch thought I was hitting on her all the time and she outed me to the entire [very homophobic] school by saying I was “creeping on her.” And then she never apologized and, to this day, still maintains I wanted her [very undesirable] body. Yeah. Gross. Fuck.]

So anyways, this simple white bitch, right? She went to my school. She was…well, very simple, very white, very much a dumb bitch.

So like the Dean of our (very racist, very homphobic, very southern) high school was this awesome chill Black dude who was forever trying to wake us up to social injustices (because, hey, privileged white southern kids don’t give a shit unless it pops up on twitter).

So then like he showed “A Time for Burning” which is this documentary about racism in the 1960s in Nebraska. It’s all about these white church leaders trying to be all like “reach out to the poor Black people” and the church members being like “fuck no you are insane.” Essentially. I’m paraphrasing here.

Anyways, this simple white bitch right?

She ACTUALLY PROTESTS SHOWING THIS FILM.

Not for any sort of trigger warning for the few Black kids.

Oh no.

She protests it, because “it NEGATIVELY PORTRAYS SOUTHERN WHITE CHRISTIANS AND WAS PROBABLY CUT TOGETHER TO MAKE THEM SOUND MORE RACIST.”

Because apparently history is too painful for you to view and even if the library of freakin’ Congress says the film has historical value, it’s way easier for white southern christians to deny documented reality than it is to accept the fact that they’ve done wrong.

…and anyways, I just wanted to tell this story because it reminds me of all the shit people have been saying about Obama, and how it’s so racist, that Black people only vote for him to be Black, and think that somehow there’s this POC conspiracy to hate all white people.

When it’s like, um, no, it’s because THERE WAS, IS, AND WILL BE a conspiracy to treat POCs like shit in this country and then deny it.

Learn your history.

Admit it.

White people are fucking assholes when they’re in power.

Now let’s get on to changing that.

Like, everyone speaks Chinese, reads it, eats the food, etc, but no one in the show is Chinese. Tam is a Chinese last name but white actors play the family members. Better yet, let’s play this dumbass “no concept of race in the future” game.

I really fucking hate it when white people are like “well most white people aren’t racist.”

like fuck you.

The reason you think most white people aren’t racist is because you’re NOT A FUCKING TARGET FOR WHITE PEOPLE’S RACISM.

I have heard the argument that “because I grew up in an area predominantly white, racism wasn’t an issue. Black people were just…normal. Really.”

No, bitch. It’s because there wasn’t as much opportunity to be racist.

And while we’re at it, the whole pro-men’s rights argument of “most men aren’t rapists/douchebags/creepers”?

Yeah, fuck you.

Because most men are not motherfucking trying to get you in bed.

Why do you think you’re so fucking homophobic? Is it because you think most gay men would want you in bed?

Why is it that somehow, that’s logical, but it’s not logical for me to say “motherfucker, do not touch my body when I do not want to be touched. I will not smile at your smarmy, bed-getting compliments.”

Dude, the gay man was just SITTING NEXT TO YOU and you motherfucking freaked. out.

basically, what I am trying to say:

Unless you are the target of a specific type of bigotry, there is no fucking way you can be an accurate judge re: the accuracy of said bigotry committed by a social demographic.

Because your sample size is just motherfucking small as fuck.

Not to mention they’re probably leaving out all the microaggressions they’ve perpetrated  stereotypes proliferated, or the fact that they don’t even know any Black people at all. Add in what Whites refuse to recognize, don’t recognize as racism and you’ve got a huge problem.

“Not Racist” and “Anti-Racist” are not default, especially if you’ve never even begun the process of recognizing and unlearning shit.

The end.
