Ponta of Shinbashi (1890)
“Ponta was one of the most fashionable and popular geisha of the Shinbashi hanamachi (geisha district) in Tokyo. She fell in love with the photographer, Seibei Kajima, at the age of seventeen, first becoming his lover and later his wife, after he divorced his second wife. However, Seibei was a hedonistic spendthrift and they eventually descended into a life of poverty. Ponta took on jobs as a photographic assistant, a bit player in vaudeville and even barnstorming, before setting up as a teacher of dance, to help support their initially lavish lifestyle.” (source)
