Instead of being a working class latino male, I identify as a white member of the liberal academic upper class. You can see it plainly in this picture. Even though I have no money or power you must treat me as such or else I will complain about my oppression on the internet.

My day on Tumblr today

An Open Letter to David Karp

thinkspeakstress:

To David Karp and all of those who work under the Support Staff: You are all misogynist, racist, homophobic trash—every single one of you. And David? Yeah, you, David Karp. You need to make some changes. 1.) You and your support team allow people to racially harass people of color. You do the same to queer people. And you especially do this to Queer People of Color. People send us racial slurs, rape threats, death threats because we are not white, because we are not straight, or both; they stalk us, they stalk our families, they continually harass us. Even when said harassers are reported, your response is that you need proof. And after you get proof, your response is: “Freedom of speech. If you don’t like it, don’t look.” Nevermind the fact that these racists come to us and harass us in ways which we have to see until we have blocked them. 2.) When people of color get pushed far enough and dare to stand up to those who are harassing them, you and your support team contact the victim and threaten to delete their blog because “Hate speech isn’t in our policy.” WITHOUT PROOF. You look through our blogs, decide you don’t like what we have to say about our own oppression, and then try to shut us down for defending ourselves. 3.) After all of this, you, a white man have the nerve to ask, “It’s okay if I say the n word, right?” (Spoiler alert: NO IT ISN’T, because it’s a fucking racial slur, you racist fuckface.) Let’s take a minute to think about that one. David Karp thinks people using racial slurs at people of color is acceptable, thinks people of color responding with justified anger is hate speech, and then has the nerve to ask if he can use one of said slurs himself. 4. You have slut shamed. 5. You have mocked your users. You’ve done nothing but show how much you care about the base that keeps your business afloat: NOT AT ALL. You don’t care one fucking bit. How dare you, David Karp. How. Fucking. Dare. You. How dare you think it is perfectly acceptable to take advantage of people the way that you do. How dare you ignore our cries for help, perpetuate problems that affect us in very real ways, and then expect us to be here, to trust you, to be your patrons. David, you seem to forget who we are. So let me remind you. We—the users of this website, the people who you see fit to trample over every day—feed your pay check. WE are the ones who got this Tumblr business off of the ground. Not you. Without us, the users, Tumblr would be an empty, failed site. It is because of US that you have thrived.

WE are your supporters. WE are your investors. WE are the gears that keep your machine running. WE are the beams that hold your fucking website up. And we are here and lift this site (and by proxy, you) by choice, not because we have to be. And WE can let it fall just as quickly. You have shown time and time again that you don’t give a damn about us. You don’t care about victimizing people who make up the fucking majority of the global population. You don’t care about hurting the users who make up over fifty percent of your userbase. But we’ve seen what you do care about. You don’t care that your users get harassed for not being white. You don’t care that your users get harassed for being female. You don’t care that your users get harassed because they’re queer. You don’t care about doing anything to protect us. And you apparently don’t care about keeping us, either, given your refusal to revise your security issues. All you care about is your site running your way, everyone else be damned, included the people who keep it afloat and keep you sitting comfy and rich in the first place. You care about nothing but yourself and the money you make off of this website. But you need to listen to us, David Karp. You need to start caring about us.. You may have made the concept for Tumblr, but we’re the ones running this machine. And we can bring it all to a screeching halt just as quickly. Things need to change. You need to take action against the real hate speech. You need to listen to your users who get hurt on this site every day. You need to reform your safety policy. You need to start making changes to this website to accomodate what the users want. You need to start worrying about our safety because when our lives are put in danger because of your lack of security options on this site, your website is a cause of whatever happens to us. You need to listen to us. If you’re not going to do that, then fine. You can have your site. You can have it your way. And you can have it all by your fucking self, because I am not going to keep my gear in this machine turning if you’re going to continually shit one me every day. Keep making an ass of yourself and acting like this website, this castle that you’ve built, is built on the most solid of rocks, but don’t you dare forget that you built it on us, people who will let you go and let you fall if you shit on us enough. You may be The Creator, but we are The People. And we are not happy. Signed with the utmost sincerity, Thinkspeakstress [Tumblrites, please feel free to sign your name if you wish to co-sign.]

Karp’s comment and the multiple faces of black pain

dreams-from-my-father:

This post is about some of the sneaky, self-righteous, judgmental, demeaning and down right stupid and ignorant comments made by some black people regarding the outrage Karp’s words caused among other black people on this site, proving me once again that if voices are all equal, opinions definitely aren’t.

It is more or less a letter addressed to black Tumblr.

I felt compelled to write this post because I think this issue illustrates what is problematic within most pro-black movements and it can also be applied to some extend to life in general: The total lack of compassion and understanding between people of a same oppressed group - here, black people.

Each of us is walking on a unique path of life with personal motives, hence we all experience blackness and white supremacy with the same individuality we we live our lives. Some of us come from countries where the word ‘colored’ is a slur, others don’t. Some of us come from places where a phenotype defines an identity others don’t. Some of us were born and raised at the heart of white supremacy, others weren’t. Our journeys as black people within white supremacy are so personal that it often happens that, the pains and scars that some of us get on the way, may not be understood and/or shared by other black people. So we all experience our blackness differently and I want to stress this: There is no right or wrong way to live your oppression - obviously as long as you do not actively try to silence, shame, dehumanize or adopt oppressive tactics and behaviours in order to hurt your peers. And this is where the problem lies.

I have been on this site for about a year now and most of the tensions within what I would call ‘Black Tumblr’ takes roots in the fact that most are truly convinced that blackness and black rage/pain are something carved in rock. While like I have said previously, they are NOT things of their own and are inseperable from the heart and soul of those who experience them. Consequently, believing such a fallacy - i.e that blackness is a thing in itself - many NEVER make the effort necessary to relate and/or understand the motives of other black people. This obviously leads them to adopt self-righteous postures that result in them shaming, silencing and hurting their black peers. This is basically all I have seen during all those months spent on this site, people thinking that the way they experince blackness is the only that is and that should be; hence any rage or pain, they can’t relate to or do not understand is illegitimate. They don’t try. Actually no one really tries to understand the other. It is funny because we all have this thing in common, our blackness, but as long as we do not understand that we experience it in unique ways, that commonality would mean nothing. Blackness, black pain and black rage have as many faces as they are black people!!! Damnit!!

So one can imagine my reaction when I saw comments such: “Why are they all up in uproar because of that post, they are ridiculous.”, “I see nothing wrong with what he said, so why don’t they shut up!”, “If this upsets you so much, you just can’t handle the real world, get off Tumblr!!”. This kind of comments were made by self-righteous and imbecile cocks, at the high of their insensitivity, convinced that if something do not shock or hurt them as a black person, it should be the same for every other black person. Henceforth, these comments shame and try  to ridicule other black people in the way they experience their blackness.

To some of you, black folks out there who think that Karp’s comment is harmless and feel the need to belittle and laugh at black people considering leaving this platform: You obviously have never woken up to tens of racially abusive messages in your ask box. If you had, you would know that Mr Karp and his minions, do not give a flying fuck and do not consider the use of the n-word hate speech, they may actually threaten to ban your black ass for defending yourself. Mr Karp does not offer support of any kind to black people victim of racism on his fucking website and this is absolutely unacceptable!! Especially when we have psychos like Sophie Von Bayern roaming around, when black women fighting for having their voices heard and respected, are mercilessly harassed and receive death threats almost daily, when aerial views of several bloggers’ houses and their personal information are published without their consent!! People fear for their safety and Karp’s comment is about YOUR safety as a black person on his website too!! You don’t get it?? Fine. But what about you keep your unintelligent verbal vomit to yourself instead of trying to shame and ridicule others??

Basic rule of human decency:  NEVER EVER TRY TO BELITTLE, SHAME, MOCK OR  RIDICULE THE PAIN AND RAGE OF ANOTHER BLACK PERSON - EVEN IF YOUR BLACK ASS CAN’T RELATE!!!!

"One of the worst parts of Tumblr is that women of color are really treated as one entity: THE WOC. If you are labeled as a WOC it defines your every interaction on this website. If you blog about funny sexual innuendo you are “a powerful fierce sister who is unashamed of your sexuality.” If you blog about politics you are “a social justice blogger whose WOC view has long been suppressed.” If you speak out against misogyny or racism you are sent death, rape, and harmful threats.

From a male perspective, this is what I have observed. You have no personal identity. You can’t be yourself. Your name, your personality, your hobbies, the people who love and adore you they mean nothing. Every move you make on this website is viewed through this narrow tunnel where you are a WOC emerging from an oppressive force. You’re never allowed to just be yourself. And when things get out of hand and you delete your blog or go on a hiatus you are reduced to “another WOC.”"

~ Your Freedom To Use Your Browser Is Under Attack ~

Tumblr’s Terms of Service hasn’t changed yet. So please read and help out!

The Tumblr staff recently requested feedback on updates they will be making to their policies. They specifically mention one of their goals is to prevent the promotion of self-harm. However, their updated Terms of Service includes something a lot less laudable.

Unable to find the required avenues to stop developers from creating and distributing browser extensions that enhance the way you use Tumblr and not getting enough of a response to their scary warning campaign, they now seem to be preparing the groundwork for coming after users of these extensions.

~ Who, you? Yes, apparently. ~

Tumblr had been previously unable to prevent all development of these extensions, scripts and add-ons because they function within your web browser, allowing you to direct these extensions to use your browser to automatically perform tasks for you on Tumblr (like quickly reblogging from the dashboard, uploading images to posts, adding control buttons to your sidebar or hiding content you don’t want to see). The extensions, themselves, do not interact directly with Tumblr, only help your web browser to do it for you!

With the upcoming changes to the Terms of Service, Tumblr will soon be able to punish someone: you.

~ How is it wrong to use something to help me enjoy Tumblr more? ~

The important part of the new Terms of Service is under the section titled Limitations on Automated Use:

You may not do any of the following while accessing or using the Services: … (c) access or search or attempt to access or search the Services by any means (automated or otherwise) other than through our currently available, published interfaces that are provided by Tumblr… (d) scrape the Services, and particularly scape (sic) Content (as defined below) from the Services, without Tumblr’s express prior written consent

These limitations will make using almost any browser extension, add-on or script for Tumblr (and even some not specifically intended for Tumblr) against the rules!

Do you use Missing e, XKit, Tumblr Savior or any Greasemonkey script for Tumblr? Well, pretty soon, that will mean you will be in violation of Tumblr’s Terms of Service. That would be grounds for terminating your account!

~ What’s the Big Deal? ~

Extensions, add-ons and scripts like Missing e, XKit and Tumblr Savior help you get better use of Tumblr. They might mean that you decide against leaving Tumblr, or that you come back to it. They make it easier to spend more time on Tumblr than you might have normally and become a more involved member of this community. These are the kind of things a company like Tumblr should want, but is instead fighting against.

This most recent step effectively means that Tumblr apparently wants to reach into your web browser and tell you exactly how you are to use it to interact with their website. Their way, and NO OTHER WAY.

~ So, What Can We Do? ~

Tumblr’s new Terms of Service policy has not yet been put into effect. They are still looking for feedback. My suggestions is that we give them feedback.

Contact Tumblr (policy@tumblr.com) and let them know that this decision will alienate the userbase they work so hard to grow. Let them know that a browser extension (be it any of them) brought you back to Tumblr, or convinced you to stay, or kept you on this site longer. Tell them that your Tumblr is better off with a Savior, a Kit of the ‘X’ variety or that Missing e!

ABOVE ALL, BE POLITE. The best way to present your case is with clearheaded statements that show Tumblr that these tools make you want to use their product more!

I like how the first article linked pretends that Ryking ‘earned’ his spot as editor through popularity; as if the most number of ‘likes’ or ‘reblogs’ made you an editor. If it did, the fact that he’s still up there would be excusable. Instead, you have hundreds of outraged users writing and reblogging posts about how terrible he is, and his horribly stilted replies that get single digit notes. Yeah, seems totally “algorithimic” to me.

I’m about to write an post, as well as a guest post to a well-known external blog about this, and if need be, I will submit it to my local news organization for review, and I need for you to understand that before I proceed. This is not something you will be able to explain away or cover up. There is already a blog post that is spreading across tumblr about this, so it’s not like no one is going to hear about it. It’s already out there. Your staff has made a mistake.

You recently removed a blog titled deathtoallwhitepeople from your servers. This is understandable, and was expected, as the entire reason it was created was to point out the hypocrisy in how certain users are well-treated at the expense of others. However, you appear to have missed all of the following blogs:

These blog titles are equally reprehensible, equally offensive, and violate your Terms of Service in the same way. I can’t imagine why they are all allowed to remain.

I also need to point out that the 1st Amendment protects private citizens against governmental censorship. It does not provide protections against the actions of a private company, like yours. You  have the option — the power — to do something about this, to stop such hateful terms from being used against a group of people who are being harmed and oppressed by them. You’ve already chosen to use that power, and therein lies the hypocrisy: you didn’t protect the free speech of the person or persons who started the deathtoallwhitepeople blog, or protect other people of color from the death threats they reported to you.

In doing what you have done, you let all of the people who were involved, along with anyone who is reading and reblogging the related posts, know that you care for the so-called 1st Amendment rights of white persons, but none for the rights of people of color.

I am disgusted by your actions, and ask that you treat your members the same — that you remove blogs that use the word “nigger” in their title, and do not allow anyone to use it in their URLs in the future.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Everybody, please, reblog the shit out of this.

I Understand

I am going to continue using Missing-E. I understand that I should anticipate potential data loss, a lack of privacy, and performance issues, and that Tumblr will not provide support for my account.

Reblog if you understand.

I understand. I understand that the features provided by Missing E make Tumblr infinitely more useful to me. I understand that Tumblr would rather provide me with an ultimatum than address the reasons that Missing E has become such a popular extension. I understand that Tumblr is not interested in developing features that their users desire. I understand that Tumblr will no longer provide support for my account. I will continue to use Missing E.

I understand this because as we ponder over what we hackers have gotten ourselves into, tumblr is utilizing funds to hire a ”full-time editorial staff to create original content and curate existing user blogs.” I understand that if you’re going to profit handsomely from our original content, you’re entitled to rescind your support if we want to ameliorate problems with your blogging platform so as to enhance our original content creating experience and thus make you more profit so that you can hire ”full-time editorial staff to create original content and curate existing user blogs” and so on and so on…
