Video: What Kind of Asian are you?
OH MY GOSH.
I LOST IT AT “BUBBLE BUBBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE.”
THIS IS HOW PEOPLE REACT WHEN THEY FIGURE OUT MY DAD IS FROM ENGLAND. WTF. When they start talking about fucking tea and crumpets in an AUSTRALIAN ACCENT or a SCOTTISH ACCENT. Straight up wanna deck their ass.
did you just take a post examining the racism behind white ppl’s treatment of asian women (particularly white men fetishizing asian women)
and turn it into
OMFG THIS SPEAKS TO MY EUROPEAN ROOTS PEOPLE NEED TO SHUT UP AND DIE FOR TREATING WHITE PPL THIS WAY
Okay, to be honest. It doesn’t matter WHAT your talking about. If your asian, british, native american, hispanic, african, whatever you are. When someone begins stereotyping you it’s pretty insulting. This could literally apply to anything. The idea is that “Oh hey, stereotyping is stupid and insulting in any circumstance so why don’t you NOT do it before I sass you into tears.”
I am really surprised it took three fucking weeks for the “what about the white people” tears to start flowing
because dear white people:
this isn’t about fucking “omfg where are you geographically from let me stereotype you”
THE POINT WAS
THE WOMAN IN THE VIDEO IS NOT GEOGRAPHICALLY FROM ANYWHERE BUT AMERICA
The woman in the video is ETHNICALLY ASIAN
THAT IS THE REASON WHY THE WHITE DUDE WAS ASKING THOSE QUESTIONS
if it was about “oh geographic location” then THE SATIRE WOULD BE ENTIRELY LOST
THE POINT IS
WHITE MEN APPROACH ASIAN WOMEN WITH THIS IDEA THAT
“OH GOOD LORD I CAN TOTALLY GET IN YOUR PANTS BY KNOWING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE”
except it’s like
a) that’s not my culture
b) I’m fucking american
c) and I’m asian
d) but just because I’m asian doesn’t mean I’m going to fuck you just because you’re spouting the equivalent of an ask jeeves response to “what is korea”
I mean let’s be real here
Most asians I know would have to undergo severe makeup enhancements to look the way white people look in yellowface.
Like look, Shirley Maclaine donned yellowface in this horrific geisha movie way back when:
Like ok, look, this is me, an actual asian woman:
now I’m considered lightskinned for an asian woman, and I’m STILL at least three tones darker. I mean, maybe they were attempting some weird rice paste geisha look but whatever.
Also, my eyes are DEFINITELY considered “chinky” and yet they are not NEARLY AS SLANTED as Shirley Maclaines. Like, the angle is ALL WRONG.
And, check it, my lips are kinda big. Like big lips are also something a lot of asian women have, but like somehow, lips are always made super small.
And, I mean, the biggest difference will always be: the nose.
My nose is a button. A button nose is VERY asian. Somehow white people are more willing to make their skin EVEN PALER when tryna look asian, but will always make their noses…well, really fucking white. always. What the hell.
So like, let’s get to Jim Sturgess.
This is him in yellowface:
this is him normal:
and this is John Cho, an ACTUAL ASIAN actor, doing the same front-on stare:
so like my points about shirley maclaine still stand:
1. John Cho is really motherfucking light skinned. Like seriously, for Asians, it doesn’t look much lighter than this. But he’s STILL NOT AS WHITE AS JIM STURGESS. The undertones are very different. And yet, in a practice called “yellowface,” in a makeup technique designed to make WHITE PEOPLE LOOK LIKE PEOPLE OF A DIFFERENT RACE, yellowface just sort of disregards skin color. Ironic? I think so.
2. And the eyes angle really pisses me off. Like something about Jim Sturgess’s yellowface eyes is just WRONG. It’s not that our eyes necessarily tilt differently (although some asian women, like lucy liu, can get caught at angles where their eye slant is quite extreme). It’s that the eyelids and general shape is flatter. But I promise you: we have motherfucking eyelids. You can look at my picture again for reference. I’m wearing motherfucking eyeshadow on mine. But white people think “Asians have eyes like fucking lizards.”
3. ALSO, the NOSE. What the FUCK is that? When I said “Button nose” I didn’t mean “We have no bridge for our nose.” Because that’s EXACTLY what they did to Jim Sturgess. Like they LITERALLY ERASED HIS BRIDGE with makeup and prosthetics. Look at John Cho’s nose, ok? Yes, it’s generally flatter and wider BUT THE BRIDGE IS THERE. And generally, asian men have more of a bridge than asian women (at least, if we’re talking east asian men. It’s a thing. A lot of girls grow up wishing they had their dad’s nose.)
5. And also, can we just talk about how shitty that hair is? Like it’s dyed, or it’s a wig (I’m not a wig expert so I’m not sure). Either way, yellowface hair tends to get weirdly shiny and plastic-y. Like they take the fact that Asian hair is generally awesome and turn it into Barbie. Look at John Cho’s hair. Does it look that stiff to you? Yeah…NO.
SO HERE’S MY OVERALL POINT ON YELLOWFACE AND GETTING WHITE ACTORS TO PLAY ASIAN CHARACTERS:
IT DOESN’T WORK IN ANY SENSE.
IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE.
IT IS NONSENSICAL.
BECAUSE YELLOWFACE NOT AN ACCURATE PORTRAYAL OF (EAST) ASIAN LOOKS.
AND BECAUSE THERE ARE ASIAN ACTORS OUT THERE WHO COULD DO JUST AS GOOD OF A JOB.
AND WOULDN’T REQUIRE FAKE-ASS MAKEUP.
THAT SHIT IS NOT REALISTIC.
THAT SHIT IS GROSS, RACIST, AND BASED ON A LOT OF INCORRECT ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT ASIAN PEOPLE.
To answer the question: “why do POCs always have to make everything about race???”
(again, couching in terms of anthropomorphic animals because apparently that is how white people on the internet learn life lessons).
OK, say there was this giraffe, right? And this giraffe was not like most giraffes, because this giraffe had a short neck.
And like, of course, all the other giraffes have really fucking long necks. They’re motherfucking giraffes.
So anyways, this poor giraffe, right? With the short neck? He’s constantly surrounded by giraffes who do not look like him. Because, he’s considered an anomaly. Not the norm.
And because there are obviously way more “normal” giraffes than this short necked giraffe, everything in their little giraffe-y world is made for giraffes with long necks. I mean, the trees are fucking huge. The trails across the Pride Lands or whatever are really hard on him because he’s so much smaller. He’s targeted by threats to giraffe society on a regular basis because he’s seen as easy prey.
And, of course, the giraffe ladies are all like “ew, I don’t like short necks; it’s just a thing. I mean, I’ve never really found them attractive per se, but like…no.”
So basically, this poor dude giraffe is living in this giraffe-y world made for AND BY giraffes that really don’t consider him their equal.
I mean, everything is basically more sucky for him because he is not like all these other giraffes and like, let’s be real here, when making things convenient for a large group of giraffes versus this one giraffe (or like for the small, small number of “small necked” giraffes), giraffes are gonna do what’s best for the bigger group. Because, isn’t that LOGICAL, right? Like short necked giraffes can like ACT like long-necked ones, can’t they? They have their own trees or bushes or whatever. It’s cool.
So anyways, if you were watching a movie about this fucking short necked giraffe, would you be all like, “OMG WHY IS EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS SHORT NECK?”
No. You would be like, “man, this is an amazing animated movie about what it’s like to be different in society and OH MY GOD WHY DO THEY HATE HIM SO HE IS SO CUTE.”
…Which brings me to my original point:
The reason why POCs “make” everything about race isn’t because they want to make white people feel bad.
The reason POCs “make everything about race” is because let’s be real here: the negative repercussions of being an ethnic minority are not actually considered anyone else’s concern except for said ethnic minorities.
Because the concerns a POC has are not the concerns of a white person’s, they are considered “specialized” and “irrelevant” to the majority of society.
And when you really look at the world around us: Yes. When nobody is willing to make concessions for your race…everything IS about race.
But…the whole country is tailored to your demographic…?
You’re telling me that some married couples make less than $100,000? I don’t understand!
I hate humanity
one quick note before I go to bed:
For all of those people out there who have messaged me, saying, “I don’t have white privilege; I’m poor!” :
I want you to take a step back for a second and realize a couple of things.
1. Privilege does not necessarily mean ECONOMIC privilege. But that’s beside the point.
2. Because automatically, in your head, you equated Black/POC oppression with a low economic status.
3. Meaning, you equated the Black/non-white experience with, essentially, being poor
4. MEANING, the defining quality of being a POC? It’s being badly off, economically speaking.
5. Conversely, you equated the privileges of being white with “being better off financially”
6. As in, being rich is a privilege that society grants, most visibly, to white people
7. Essentially, what I am trying to say is:
WHAT DOES THAT THOUGHT PROCESS SAY ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF WHITE PRIVILEGE?
I know I am greek
- I like hummus
- I like to smash shit and say OMMPAAAA
I think I am asian
- I look asian
- I find other asians attractive
- I seriously look asian, like people have asked me before
- I can’t drive
I think I am hispanic
- I love all food that comes from all hispanic countries
- I like guys who play soccer and their soccer asses
- I have an awesome spanish accent (for a white girl)
- I have this strange instinct to dance whenever I hear latin music
- I got hips like a spanish gurllll
- I think hispanic guys are hot (but who doesn’t)
I think I am black
- My dad is BFF’s with all the Kenyans at his work
- I have a huge ass
I know I am white
- Because I wish I wasn’t
…..and here, ladies and gentlemen, we have the privilege-denying white person in their natural habitat. Watch as they deny any sort of benefit from being white, while simultaneously “identifying as other races” simply because of their own false, preconceived notions of said minorities! Observe their complete lack of understanding in terms of what is offensive, racist bullshit and what is not. Note the completely misplaced sense of self-pity.
(And, ok, somebody please enlighten me as to “what asian looks like” because I SWEAR TO GOD ASIA A FUCKING CONTINENT AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF SURROUNDING ISLANDS and somehow white people know what that entire huge conglomeration of people “look like”)
Also “My dad knows all the Kenyans from work”?
WHAT THE FUCK.
You knew The University of Bullshit was going to have a tough class schedule when you enrolled.

A literal “White” Whine
White Privileged folks all over my dash, whining about how we POC “make everything about race”.
You white people fail to realize this entire country exists only because of issues concerning race. But feel free to keep reading your White Mythos about how the white people just wanted somewhere to be free to do whatever the fuck they wanted, so they came to this land, killed off the people already living here, but they didn’t want to do the work necessary to build an actual country, so they came to another land, took people from there, and subsequently oppressed and subjugated them for over 400 years. When someone pointed out how wrong it was to openly subjugate and oppress people because of skin color, the descendants of the “I just wanna do what I wanna do” decided to use more subtle tactics. Zing words like “gentrification” and “red-lining” came up, and in the workplace “affirmative action”, a thinly-disguised “we need a token POC so we don’t look as racist as we actually are”.
Maybe you guys will continue to ignore us, but let me share something with you. I advise you to read and assess the information before you interject your privileged opinions and bullshit conjecture in a conversation between POC.
WARNINGS: whitesplaining racism-supporting “NO, YOOOOOU!” garbage; ableist appropriation of term “color blind”
Ok so let’s have a little lesson in economics and crime rates in cities. What made it the worst place in Philadelphia was the CRIME, and for the most part, the highest amount of crime in a city happens in the lower income sectors, the two are very seldom exclusive of each other. And guess what, there were all kinds of people living in poverty there. POVERTY IS COLOR BLIND, it does not inherently affect one race more than another strictly due to the color of their skin. I’ve lived next to Camden NJ ever since I moved out of that neighborhood, which is UNFORTUNATELY riddled with poverty and crime, which is not the fault of the people living there, it is the fault of the corrupted government not serving it’s people to the fullest.
How dare you imply that I think I’m better than the people that lived in the same neighborhood as me. I was an infant, just a little girl. I remember hearing gun shots from my bed room window and our house was broken into twice. I was not better than my neighbors, I am not better and I never will be. They are people all the same, and for you to think that I have such ignorant views of the world around me is slander, since you know pretty much nothing about me. I live in a diverse neighborhood in New Brunswick, and cherish the culture that exists because of the locals. My boyfriend helped create a program to help the illegal immigrants in the area get the proper medical services and food for their children. I have a large diverse group of friends who come from various different economic and social backgrounds and I respect and love them all the same. How dare you assume that because I simply stated that I’m tired of the hate that goes on on both sides, that I’m suddenly an racist elitist. I’m not going to sit and argue that there isn’t social injustice in the United States, but it’s good to know that it isn’t just happening to peoples of a certain race or ethnic background. It’s happening to everyone. And what an ignorant point of view it is to have that suddenly people care because it’s the “white” people who are suffering now, when EVERYONE is suffering now.
And also, what guilty conscience of mine is speaking now? Because I don’t believe I’m hurting financially any more or less than any other person in the United States? That I’m not hurting more or less than another student buried in student loans or a family trying to pay back a mortgage? I worked hard throughout high school to graduate with a fucking 3.8 GPA, 11th in my class. I worked part time jobs since I was legally able to at the age of 16, and yet for all my hard work, I’m 30k in debt, for a school I dropped out of and another 30k for the schooling I’m currently enrolled in. And there are millions of people who worked just as hard or probably even HARDER that are in my place or worse. I pay my own fucking rent, bills, food, school, EVERYTHING. I’m 20 years old and have had to work for EVERYTHING I have in my life right now, and I would gladly give the US government my hard earned money if it helped people, ALL PEOPLE.
It’s people like you who spread hate in the world; you think you’re doing everyone a favor by pointing out flaws in peoples arguments, telling them they don’t care about the world they live in simply because they hold an opinion. So how about instead of posting hateful remarks which you know no doubt will be responded to, go volunteer in a soup kitchen, write letters and make phone calls to your senators and representatives asking them to stop cuts on social programs, donate money to organizations for the homeless and disenfranchised, and stop thinking that chewing me up and spitting me out (which failed horribly BTW) is really going to change the bad things happening in the world.
“POVERTY IS COLOR BLIND”
And that is the only “point” I’m gonna take time to refute as this entire rant is so willfully ignorant of reality. But continue to whine about how white people have it just as bad as everyone else! Don’t ever click those links I provided to become a more informed citizen!
you are far more racist than I am, or ever will be if this truly is your opinion. “You must be white here?” Are you for real? You are totally not for equality if this is the opinion you hold. We’re all human beings, we have the same problems, although there is a clear history of discrimination and intolerance in this country, it is our duty as human beings to put aside our differences and work to break down barriers, both racial and economic. These are issues we need to stand for as Americans and they effect all of us. Don’t tell me I can’t understand something simply based on the color of my skin.
All men are created equal…
@maaaaaaag: NO WE DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. there are some overlaps, yeah, but WHITES LIKE US ARE NOT TARGETED BY WHITE SUPREMACIST OPPRESSION. WE ARE NOT TARGETED BY RACISM — IN FACT WE BENEFIT FROM IT. and saying “NO, *YOU* ARE RACIST!!!!!” when people call you on YOUR racism is not even an argument. you are just totally unwilling to consider liquornspice’s points. you’d rather self-righteously troll than, i don’t know, ACTUALLY CONSIDER ANYTHING. we whites are racially privileged under white supremacist systems — THIS IS A FACT. whites like us under a white supremacist system CANNOT KNOW WHAT RACISM IS REALLY LIKE FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, and BENEFIT FROM RACISM, so we often spout garbage like yours that demonstrates our willful ignorance of the truth about racism — THIS IS ALSO A FACT. you’re being willfully ignorant and swimming in your white privilege. AND POINTING THIS OUT DOES NOT MAKE LIQUORNSPICE RACIST AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE [and in fact IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE RACIST AGAINST WHITES UNDER A WHITE SUPREMACIST SYSTEM].
and again, your using the term “color blind” the way you do is ableist appropriation.
Let’s back up a second here. When did everyone become so bitter? And also, when did this become an issue of race? Because there is a black police officer in the picture? Its incredible the racism that exists on BOTH sides, and that the economy is color blind. It has been BAD FOR EVERYONE, I don’t appreciate it when people say that “Now we’re paying attention because the shit hit the fan for white people.” What’s that supposed to mean? That because I’m white I’ve been immune from financial difficulties up until now, and that even now, I’m not hurting as much as every black, hispanic or asian person in the USA? My WHITE MOTHER was on welfare for 2 years because my abusive father left her with me and my sick brother. We had to live in the worst part of philadelphia while she attended NIGHT SCHOOL so she could work and pay for us just to have shelter and food. And now, as a 20 year old WHITE citizen I live paycheck to paycheck with 30k in student debt for a school i didn’t even graduate from. I have bill collectors calling me already about over due accounts on medical bills for a suicide attempt and forced hospitalization in a facility not of my choosing that was not covered under my insurance. Insurance I almost LOST if it weren’t for the healthcare bill recently passed. So how about we stop bitching about color issues and see that EVERYONE IS HURTING. EVERYONE. And the protests in New York are not about color or race or creed or whatever, it’s about people and how people have mismanaged the wealth in this nation regardless of the color of their skin. So how about we stop doing this race bullshit and treat everyone as equals.
It’s a “race issue” because people like you see nothing wrong with saying shit like this: “We had to live in the worst part of philadelphia.”
What made it the worst part of Philidelphia, hm? How come the problem with that part of the city is that you had to live there? And not the poverty “that part” of Philly had to deal with for decades before you “had to” live there? What about the people there? Why aren’t you indignant about their suffering? No, you’re just mad you had to live with them. And that tells me all I need to know.
PS: “I don’t appreciate it when people say that ‘Now we’re paying attention because the shit hit the fan for white people.’ What’s that supposed to mean? […] that even now, I’m not hurting as much as every black, hispanic or asian person in the USA?” I believe that’s your guilty conscience speaking.
HA! this this THIS FUCKING THIS!
So do we. So do we…
